Sichuan Taikang Hospital Cures Girl’s Rare Nerve Pain

Having young children in Sichuan, and not being able to access your trusted doctors back home can be a real worry, especially as our little ones often pick up ear infections or worse.

However in the last decade in Chengdu, world-class facilities have opened in the city – with amazing cases like this reminding us how world-class medical care here has become.

• Recently, an 11-year-old girl had sharp pain around her eyes and ears for months. Treatments for ear infections did nothing to ease her symptoms.

• Dr. Yuan Yuqing’s neurosurgery team at Sichuan Taikang Hospital found she had a rare nerve condition. They carried out a small, precise surgery to fix the issue, and the girl has recovered fully and gone home.

• Sichuan Taikang Hospital provides multilingual, customized premium medical services. It removes language barriers and offers reliable surgical support for international patients.

Minimally‑Invasive Surgery Treats Girl’s Rare Nerve Pain

Recently, a medical team led by Director Yuan Yuqing from the Department of Neurosurgery at Sichuan Taikang Hospital completed microscopic microvascular decompression on an 11-year-old girl suffering from rare migratory glossopharyngeal neuralgia, permanently eliminating her excruciating long-term pain. The patient has now recovered and been discharged from the hospital.

Tracking Migratory Pain Patterns to Deliver Targeted Surgery

The 11-year-old girl suffered from sudden, stabbing pain in her inner ears and eye sockets for more than three months. The discomfort flared unpredictably across four areas: both eye sockets and inner ears, often keeping her awake all night. Local hospitals treated her repeatedly for otitis media with no relief. After researching specialist care, her family brought her to Sichuan Taikang Hospital for inpatient treatment.

Upon admission, Director Yuan created a pain log for the child. After five days of recording pain timing and locations, he diagnosed rare migratory glossopharyngeal neuralgia, identifying the left side as the primary pain source. The team opted for left-sided microvascular decompression to resolve the core issue first.

Micro‑Surgery Resolves Severe Wandering Nerve Pain

The surgery proceeded smoothly with full coordination from the anesthesiology team. Doctors made a tiny bone window behind the child’s ear and used a surgical microscope to examine the left glossopharyngeal nerve. Multiple tiny blood vessels wrapped tightly around the nerve, bound down by thickened milky arachnoid membrane, creating severe compression.

With precise microsurgical techniques, Director Yuan’s team carefully cut and released the fibrous membrane layer by layer, fully separating the abnormal blood vessels and arachnoid tissue from the trapped nerve. This fully relieved nerve compression while minimizing surgical trauma. Unlike standard microvascular decompression (MVD), which typically implants padding between nerves and vessels, this procedure focused on releasing tethering caused by abnormal arachnoid fibrosis.

Post‑op follow‑up supports long‑term research

The child experienced zero pain episodes after surgery. The team asked her family to continue documenting pain logs for three months post-discharge to collect clinical data for research on this rare pediatric disorder.

This operation demands masterful mastery of posterior fossa microanatomy and advanced microsurgical skills. Sichuan Taikang Hospital’s Neurosurgery department routinely performs microvascular decompression to treat functional cranial nerve disorders including trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

The department is equipped with high-end surgical microscopes and neuroelectrophysiological monitoring systems to deliver top-tier care for cranial nerve patients nationwide.

Expert Reminder: Watch for Recurrent Facial and Ear Pain

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia mostly affects middle-aged and elderly adults; childhood cases are extremely uncommon. Typical symptoms include paroxysmal sharp pain in the tongue root, throat, tonsils, ear roots and lower jaw. Cases featuring primary pain in the inner ears and eye sockets, like this girl’s, are exceptionally rare.

While headaches, toothaches, throat and ear pain are common daily complaints, recurring persistent discomfort requires medical attention. Director Yuan urges anyone with repeated pain in the head, face, teeth or around the ears to undergo screening for cranial nerve diseases for early diagnosis and treatment.

• Whiew! Chengdu is getting hot! While we’re over 1,000km from the ocean, there are plenty of great ways to go swimming in the city! Ducking into 7-ELEVEN and opening the fridge doors might feel refreshing, but outdoor swimming pools are a much better option!

• Luckily, there’s no shortage of outdoor pools around town, but most of which are tucked away in residential compounds or in five-star hotels, so can be a little hard to find.

• They range from lap pools, and children’s paddling pools, to the city’s much loved leisure piscines, best enjoyed with a margarita in hand…. So grab your goggles, slap on some sunscreen and inflate those floaties – it’s time to take a dip!

Note: If you discover a new pool you think should be featured, or any updates to the info provided below, please let us know in the comment section.

Orchard Villa 锦绣花园

orchard villa outdoor swimming pool in chengdu

This isn’t the city’s most glamorous pool but it is probably the most popular with the international community. On hot summer’s day, you’ll find it inside the Orchard villa compound, awash with Chengdu’s young and flirty, listening to music and sipping on frozen Margaritas. Just remember 1 may not be enough, but 3 is too many.

There’s a fenced in shallow children’s pool, and the larger lap pool which is 1.7 meters at it’s deepest. There are very basic toilets and showers on site, and they’re quite relaxed about bringing in your own food and drinks. So pack up your picnic, pull up a blue plastic chair, and relax!

A City of Deep History and Culture

Any complete Chengdu travel guide must highlight the city’s rich history, which spans over 2,000 years. It was once the center of the ancient Shu Kingdom and played a key role in Chinese history. Today, you can still see its rich past at places like Wuhou Shrine, Qingyang Palace, and the peaceful Wenshu Monastery. You can also walk through the Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuan Zhai Xiangzi) to experience life during the Qing Dynasty, with traditional teahouses, old-style homes, and tasty street snacks.

What’s the Weather Like in Chengdu?

Chengdu has a mild, humid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often rainy, while winters are cold and damp, but rarely see snow. One thing to note is that air pollution can be a concern in winter, when coal is burned for heating across China. During this time, air quality can reach PM2.5 levels over 150.

👉 Here’s how to stay safe during winter pollution in Chengdu. We recommend checking daily air quality with the Smart Air app or the American Consulate, wearing a good mask outdoors, and using an air purifier indoors.

The Home of the Giant Panda

Chengdu is famous for being the home of giant pandas, one of China’s national symbols. At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, millions of people visit each year to see pandas eat, sleep, and play. The city works hard to protect these animals, making it a great place for animal lovers. Want to see more nature? Try a day trip around Chengdu to places like Mount Qingcheng or the Leshan Giant Buddha.

A Culinary Paradise

Chengdu dishes, Chengdu Expat

One of the highlights of any Chengdu travel guide is its unforgettable food scene. Chengdu is known around the world for its food, especially its spicy Sichuan dishes. It’s a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and the home of famous meals like mapo tofu, dandan noodles, and Sichuan hotpot. The food is bold, flavorful, and often uses mala, a spice that makes your mouth tingle.

AIER’s Refractive Surgeries:

Tailored Solutions for Clear Vision

1) LASIK

The blade-free LASIK ensures superior safety and precision during corneal flap creation. Every procedure is fully customized, capable of correcting up to 10 diopters of myopia and 5 diopters of astigmatism.

2) SMILE

(Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

SMILE procedure uses Femtosecond laser, a Nobel-prized technology that allows as tiny as 2-4mm surgical incision and does not involve corneal flap creation, thus carries no risk of flap dislocation, making it suitable for athletes, military personnel, and others in contact or physically demanding professions. The procedure is straightforward, requiring relatively less patient cooperation.

3) 3D Ray-tracing Optimized Lasik

This groundbreaking myopia correction technology with full-eye-analysis captures ultra-precise corneal data to design bespoke treatment plans. With carving accuracy down to 0.01 diopters, it effectively reduces residual astigmatism. Most patients regain clear vision the next day and can quickly return to work and daily life.

4) ICL Implantation

ICL implantation preserves your natural eye lens. It corrects broad range of myopia (0.5- 18 diopters), astigmatism within 6 diopters, and is the ideal choice for people who wish to remove glasses but want their corneas remain untouched. The surgery is reversible and requires no corneal cutting, keeping your eye’s original structure intact. Globally, one ICL implant is performed every 4 minutes.

5) IOL Exchange

This treatment removes the eye’s natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens. It is mainly recommended for people aged 45 and above, those with loss of lens flexibility, high refractive errors, and anyone looking to get rid of glasses permanently.

If you have any problem as mentioned above, you are suggested to do a professional eye health examination to protect your eyes ASAP.

  • The cause of 1 in 8 Deaths worldwide is due to high blood pressure – or hypertension as doctors often refer to it. It is a very common medical condition which can often go undiagnosed. Globally, it’s the leading known cause of premature death through stroke, heart disease and chronic kidney disease.
  • It’s often termed a ‘silent killer’ due to its subtle symptoms yet severe impact on health if left unmanaged. In many countries, men are found to have higher blood pressure than women, putting them at greater risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • BUT it can be managed and prevented! Learn more in this article

Hypertension: Causes, symptoms and prevention

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension occurs when the blood pressure in the arteries is consistently too high. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two figures: systolic pressure (pressure when the heart beats) and diastolic pressure (pressure when the heart rests between beats).

Causes and Risk Factors

Several factors contribute to high blood pressure, including genetics, age, lifestyle choices, and certain medical conditions. Key risk factors include obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, stress, and a high-salt diet.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Hypertension often goes unnoticed as it may not present obvious symptoms. Routine checks are vital for early detection. When symptoms do occur, they can include headaches, shortness of breath, and nosebleeds.

Prevention and Awareness

Preventative measures include maintaining a healthy weight, limiting alcohol consumption, quitting smoking, and regular health screenings.

Management and Treatment

Managing hypertension involves lifestyle changes, medication, or a combination of both. Healthy eating, regular exercise, and stress reduction are crucial. In some cases, antihypertensive medications are prescribed.

Regular health screenings

Chengdu BOE Hospital (成都东京方医院) is the city’s largest international hospital – and have specialists who run high blood pressure screenings, treatments and preventative medicine – to keep you from becoming a hypertension risk.

Ziko Baby – By Moms, For Moms.

A WeChat Group for All Baby Essentials

If you’ve ever gone down an online rabbit hole searching for baby stuff, this one’s for you, dear new (or expecting) parent.

A new kind of baby community is landing this summer – built by mamas, to make young parents’ lives easier and help them find trusted products for their little ones (and for mamas too).

Meet Ziko Baby.

Ziko Baby, the newest member of the Zikoland family, opens its doors (well, its WeChat group) on June 16. It’s a community first online platform – with a carefully chosen shelf of products that real mamas actually use and trust.

THE ZIKO STORY

If the name Ziko rings a bell, you may already know Zikoland – the Shanghai-grown, WeChat-based collective behind Ziko Kitchen, Ziko Cellar, Ziko Farm and Ziko Pet Corner.

Some of you are likely in one of their multiple WeChat groups. Since 2017, they’ve been quietly doing the same thing: gathering good people around good products, with quality always front of mind.

BY MOMS, FOR MOMS

Ziko Baby is the natural next chapter. As the community grew, the team asked the mamas among them one simple question: what’s missing? Then they went sourcing – starting with the tried-and-tested products they already used with their own babies.

The result: a curated collection moms can rely on – French diapers, healthy snacks and meals, imported juices, essentials for newborns and mamas, everything big and small a baby needs.

And just like in every Zikoland group, each product comes with a daily flash-sale price.

After months of preparation and trials (see the community feedback above!), Ziko Baby officially launches on June 16 at 2pm in the Ziko Baby WeChat group, with its first flash sale of the day.

Expect essentials covering every stage from 0 to 4 years.

MORE THAN SHOPPING

Coming up: groups by age, where mamas (and papas!) swap real experience, occasional meet-ups and workshops, plus perks from Zikoland partners – restaurants, hospitals, hotels and more. When? Soon, right after the community grows bigger.

HOW TO JOIN

Easy: add Ziko Baby community manager Suzi on WeChat, and she’ll invite you into the group. What you’ll find inside are curated products, by moms, for moms – with care and love.
