Life here moves at a slower, more relaxed pace, perfect for enjoying a cup of tea and taking it all in. As the capital of Sichuan Province and home to over 16 million people, Chengdu is known for much more than spicy hotpot and cute pandas, it’s also one of the most comfortable and livable cities in China. Before you come, here are 7 things to know before visiting Chengdu.

Check out our local Chengdu travel guide to culture, food, and pandas below. Discover top sights, local tips, and must-know info for travelers, expats, and food lovers!

Chengdu Travel Guide | Chengdu Expat

A City of Deep History and Culture

Any complete Chengdu travel guide must highlight the city’s rich history, which spans over 2,000 years. It was once the center of the ancient Shu Kingdom and played a key role in Chinese history. Today, you can still see its rich past at places like Wuhou Shrine, Qingyang Palace, and the peaceful Wenshu Monastery. You can also walk through the Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuan Zhai Xiangzi) to experience life during the Qing Dynasty, with traditional teahouses, old-style homes, and tasty street snacks.

👉 Check out our guide to must-see attractions in Chengdu for more places to explore. In addition, Don’t miss these must-visit museums in Chengdu.

What’s the Weather Like in Chengdu?

Chengdu has a mild, humid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often rainy, while winters are cold and damp, but rarely see snow. One thing to note is that air pollution can be a concern in winter, when coal is burned for heating across China. During this time, air quality can reach PM2.5 levels over 150.

👉 Here’s how to stay safe during winter pollution in Chengdu. We recommend checking daily air quality with the Smart Air app or the American Consulate, wearing a good mask outdoors, and using an air purifier indoors.

The Home of the Giant Panda

Chengdu is famous for being the home of giant pandas, one of China’s national symbols. At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, millions of people visit each year to see pandas eat, sleep, and play. The city works hard to protect these animals, making it a great place for animal lovers. Want to see more nature? Try a day trip around Chengdu to places like Mount Qingcheng or the Leshan Giant Buddha.

A Culinary Paradise

Chengdu dishes, Chengdu Expat

One of the highlights of any Chengdu travel guide is its unforgettable food scene. Chengdu is known around the world for its food, especially its spicy Sichuan dishes. It’s a UNESCO City of Gastronomy and the home of famous meals like mapo tofu, dandan noodles, and Sichuan hotpot. The food is bold, flavorful, and often uses mala, a spice that makes your mouth tingle.

Not sure where to start? Here are 7 must-eat dishes in Chengdu that every visitor should try at least once.

Relaxed, Friendly, and Fun

Chengdu is known for its relaxed way of life. While many big cities in China are fast-paced, Chengdu is calm and easygoing. People here enjoy simple things, like drinking tea in teahouses, playing mahjong in the park, or walking through green spaces like People’s Park. For budget-friendly ways to enjoy the city, explore these cheap things to do in Chengdu. To make your trip picture-perfect, don’t miss these Instagrammable spots in Chengdu.

It’s also a great city for families. If you’re visiting or living here with kids, there are tons of fun activities for children in Chengdu to explore. Because of this laid-back lifestyle, Chengdu is seen as one of the best cities to live in. Many young people, artists, and entrepreneurs are choosing to move here and make it their home. Thinking about staying longer? Take a look at our 2025 Guide for Foreigners in China.

A Modern, Connected Hub

Even though life in Chengdu is relaxed, it’s still a modern and well-connected city. It has a big subway system, high-speed trains, and an international airport with flights to cities around the world. Chengdu is also a growing center for technology and innovation, sometimes called “China’s Silicon Valley West.”

Outdoor Swimming Pools in & around Chengdu

• Whiew! Chengdu is getting hot! While we’re over 1,000km from the ocean, there are plenty of great ways to go swimming in the city! Ducking into 7-ELEVEN and opening the fridge doors might feel refreshing, but outdoor swimming pools are a much better option!

• Luckily, there’s no shortage of outdoor pools around town, but most of which are tucked away in residential compounds or in five-star hotels, so can be a little hard to find.

• They range from lap pools, and children’s paddling pools, to the city’s much loved leisure piscines, best enjoyed with a margarita in hand…. So grab your goggles, slap on some sunscreen and inflate those floaties – it’s time to take a dip!

Note: If you discover a new pool you think should be featured, or any updates to the info provided below, please let us know in the comment section.

There is no shortage of outdoor swimming pools here, but most of which are tucked away in residential compounds or in five-star hotels, so can be a little hard to find. They range from lap pools, and children’s paddling pools, to the city’s much loved leisure piscines, best enjoyed with a margarita in hand…

Orchard Villa 锦绣花园

orchard villa outdoor swimming pool in chengdu

This isn’t the city’s most glamorous pool but it is probably the most popular with the international community. On hot summer’s day, you’ll find it inside the Orchard villa compound, awash with Chengdu’s young and flirty, listening to music and sipping on frozen Margaritas. Just remember 1 may not be enough, but 3 is too many.

There’s a fenced in shallow children’s pool, and the larger lap pool which is 1.7 meters at it’s deepest. There are very basic toilets and showers on site, and they’re quite relaxed about bringing in your own food and drinks. So pack up your picnic, pull up a blue plastic chair, and relax!

Sometimes it’s a bit hard to communicate with the old couple at the entrance, but that is sort of part of the charm…

AIER’s Refractive Surgeries:

Tailored Solutions for Clear Vision

1) LASIK

The blade-free LASIK ensures superior safety and precision during corneal flap creation. Every procedure is fully customized, capable of correcting up to 10 diopters of myopia and 5 diopters of astigmatism.

2) SMILE

(Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

SMILE procedure uses Femtosecond laser, a Nobel-prized technology that allows as tiny as 2-4mm surgical incision and does not involve corneal flap creation, thus carries no risk of flap dislocation, making it suitable for athletes, military personnel, and others in contact or physically demanding professions. The procedure is straightforward, requiring relatively less patient cooperation.

3) 3D Ray-tracing Optimized Lasik

This groundbreaking myopia correction technology with full-eye-analysis captures ultra-precise corneal data to design bespoke treatment plans. With carving accuracy down to 0.01 diopters, it effectively reduces residual astigmatism. Most patients regain clear vision the next day and can quickly return to work and daily life.

4) ICL Implantation

ICL implantation preserves your natural eye lens. It corrects broad range of myopia (0.5- 18 diopters), astigmatism within 6 diopters, and is the ideal choice for people who wish to remove glasses but want their corneas remain untouched. The surgery is reversible and requires no corneal cutting, keeping your eye’s original structure intact. Globally, one ICL implant is performed every 4 minutes.

5) IOL Exchange

This treatment removes the eye’s natural lens and replaces it with an artificial intraocular lens. It is mainly recommended for people aged 45 and above, those with loss of lens flexibility, high refractive errors, and anyone looking to get rid of glasses permanently.

If you have any problem as mentioned above, you are suggested to do a professional eye health examination to protect your eyes ASAP.

The top WeChat Groups guaranteed to keep you in the loop in Chengdu.

Love or hate the constant notifications and occasional spamming from WeChat groups, there’s not many of us that could survive in Chengdu without them because some are seriously obscene (The Yellow Fever group I’m looking at you) whilst others are a little niche (Chengdu Cat Appreciators) however they all play a part in keeping us up-to-date and entertained.

Activities in Chengdu

Chengdu Foodies
foodfingers

The focus of this foodie circle is to discuss food in Chengdu and share where to find bargains therefore now numerous restaurant owners, hotels and bars offer discounts in their kitchens for group members.

What we say:
This is undoubtedly one of our favourite groups on WeChat because you can get some real steals in some of Chengdu’s finest eateries and on delivery services too. However… it must be said, the real joy from this group is from all the foodie infighting: on the menu it says ibérico ham BUT THERE’S NO WAY THAT PIG WAS FED ON ACORNS – so you better know your foie gras from your fougasse! Also, hurry this group only has 40 places left!

What they say:
GROUP/DISCOUNT RULES
You must show your phone to staff or management.
Only for Chengdu Food Finders Group.
Please note you can not add to any other promotional offers.
Please post a review and picture on TripAdvisor
You can only advertise in this group if you supply a discount.
Don’t be sly and try to advertise indirectly.
If you would like to advertise in this group PM me directly.
This group was originally set up for people who found bargains or discounts on western food, but it has evolved. If you as an individual find a bargain or discount either in a supermarket or restaurant please post.
Please be polite and courteous to other group members.

Chengdu Expats

chengdu-expat-chengdu-expatsA general purpose community group for expats living in Chengdu.

What we say:
This group was started a few years ago in Chengdu and is extremely useful if you want to ask general questions about Chengdu, find a hairdresser, sell your things, find an apartment – it’s a good place to ask to be placed into other groups or have someone’s contact card shared.

What they say:
Thank you for joining the Chengdu Expat group. The main goal of this group is to strengthen the expat community here in Chengdu. Get to know new people, share your knowledge, give your opinion, help each other out, etc.. but most importantly respect each other. Please use only English as everyone here speaks mainly English. Discrimination, ads, job posts and stickers are forbidden and will result in a direct ban from the group.

Feel free inviting your friend over and thank you for respecting the group rules!

CD-Expat Buy & Sell

chengdu-expat-buy-and-sell
A forum for buying and selling mostly used or difficult to find items in Chengdu.

What we say:
Living in a community where people’s average stay is only a year or two, there is a constant stream of people leaving. But equally this means there are always new people appearing hoping to set up shop, needing new things, so the market for second hand goods in Chengdu is great – this group is useful if you’re looking to buy or sell a bike, a coffee machine, furniture, your old HSK books and more.

What they say:
Well, Hello!  This is an English speaking group – Please use common sense and keep conversation on topic . If not, you’re out. Many thanks!

Cd-Expat Sports

chengdu-expat-sports-groupThis is a relatively new group for finding out about sporting equipment and activities in Chengdu.

What we say:
This group is strictly moderated by the Chengdu-Expat team and is a forum to ask questions about where to find facilities, equipment and a place to find out about sporting events. The best thing about this group, is you can normally find like minded people to go hiking, swimming or bike riding with. There is a strict restriction on 1 post per event rule, so it’s not too spammy!

What they say:
Well, Hello!  This is an English speaking group – Please use common sense and keep conversation on topic . If not, you’re out. Many thanks!

CD-Expat Jobs (No teaching/Modelling)

chengdu-expat-jobs
A group to advertising jobs, with the exception of teaching and modelling.

What we say:
This is a great place to look or advertise for specialist workers such as translators and artists, outside of the usual white face teaching or modelling jobs in most other job groups – it’s very tightly moderated. Note, there is another Chengdu-Expat run group that is specifically geared towards teaching if that is what you are looking for.

What they say:
Like with all Chengdu-Expat run  groups – Well, Hello!  This is an English speaking group – Please use common sense and keep conversation on topic . If not, you’re out. Many thanks!

Because China.

chengdu-expat-because-china
A group to remind you of the insanity that is China.

What we say:
The fact you’ve just read a whole article about the best WeChat groups in Chengdu means you already appreciate the wackier side of China. This group shares pictures, sights, memes and stories about the daily insanity that unfolds on China’s streets; a man dangling his baby into a tiger enclosure, an employee sitting in the freezer at Wowo on his laptop or the many Chinglish signs around Chengdu. Because…China.

What they say:
Nothing. There are clearly no words necessary.
