The 2027 Chengdu Michelin Guide Announcement

For the 6th year running the Michelin Guide has cast their discerning eyes on Chengdu’s food and beverage scene. And with one of China’s proudest food cultures, we always wonder how this will be received.
The new guide has just been published for 2027; compared with the 2026 edition, Chengdu gains its‑first‑ever three‑star restaurant, sees growth in one‑star entries and adds more Bib Gourmand picks.
This is good news in a city so passionate about the fly restaurants that bring all walks of life together, and are great levelers.

There is of course some extremely impressive culinary talent recognised this year.

Congratulations on everyone who was included, especially those brave enough to push boundaries in the international food scene.

Happy dining Chengdu!

The 2027 Chengdu Michelin List

Except for the landmark milestone of Chengdu’s‑first‑ever Three‑Star restaurant, there was otherwise limited movement among star‑rated establishments this year. One venue was promoted from two‑star to three‑star, while two new entries joined the one‑star rank. There were five fewer Michelin‑recommended locations, and five more awarded the Bib Gourmand.

This year’s Chengdu list totalled 84 listings, including 1 Three‑Michelin‑Star, 1 Two‑Michelin‑Star, 13 One‑Michelin‑Stars, 37 Michelin‑recommended restaurants and 32 Bib Gourmand.

Michelin has globally discontinued the Green Star award starting May 2026, replaced by the “Mindful Voices” editorial series instead of a formal prize.

Consul-General Farewell Letter

In a letter published on the consulate’s social media account on Wednesday, Gadi Harpaz described his five years as Israeli consul general in the southwestern Chinese city as “the most memorable of his diplomatic career” and said he was parting “with a deep sense of sadness and nostalgia”.“Although the consulate general is closing, the bridges of friendship, mutual respect and shared memories we built over the last five years will endure,” Harpaz wrote.

There has been some commentary around how the conflict in the Middle East, eventually effected this consulate mission, published by the South China Morning Post (click here), but we are not here to speculate.

Sichuan Taikang Hospital Cures Girl’s Rare Nerve Pain

Having young children in Sichuan, and not being able to access your trusted doctors back home can be a real worry, especially as our little ones often pick up ear infections or worse.

However in the last decade in Chengdu, world-class facilities have opened in the city – with amazing cases like this reminding us how world-class medical care here has become.

• Recently, an 11-year-old girl had sharp pain around her eyes and ears for months. Treatments for ear infections did nothing to ease her symptoms.

• Dr. Yuan Yuqing’s neurosurgery team at Sichuan Taikang Hospital found she had a rare nerve condition. They carried out a small, precise surgery to fix the issue, and the girl has recovered fully and gone home.

• Sichuan Taikang Hospital provides multilingual, customized premium medical services. It removes language barriers and offers reliable surgical support for international patients.

Minimally‑Invasive Surgery Treats Girl’s Rare Nerve Pain

Recently, a medical team led by Director Yuan Yuqing from the Department of Neurosurgery at Sichuan Taikang Hospital completed microscopic microvascular decompression on an 11-year-old girl suffering from rare migratory glossopharyngeal neuralgia, permanently eliminating her excruciating long-term pain. The patient has now recovered and been discharged from the hospital.

Tracking Migratory Pain Patterns to Deliver Targeted Surgery

The 11-year-old girl suffered from sudden, stabbing pain in her inner ears and eye sockets for more than three months. The discomfort flared unpredictably across four areas: both eye sockets and inner ears, often keeping her awake all night. Local hospitals treated her repeatedly for otitis media with no relief. After researching specialist care, her family brought her to Sichuan Taikang Hospital for inpatient treatment.

Upon admission, Director Yuan created a pain log for the child. After five days of recording pain timing and locations, he diagnosed rare migratory glossopharyngeal neuralgia, identifying the left side as the primary pain source. The team opted for left-sided microvascular decompression to resolve the core issue first.

Micro‑Surgery Resolves Severe Wandering Nerve Pain

The surgery proceeded smoothly with full coordination from the anesthesiology team. Doctors made a tiny bone window behind the child’s ear and used a surgical microscope to examine the left glossopharyngeal nerve. Multiple tiny blood vessels wrapped tightly around the nerve, bound down by thickened milky arachnoid membrane, creating severe compression.

With precise microsurgical techniques, Director Yuan’s team carefully cut and released the fibrous membrane layer by layer, fully separating the abnormal blood vessels and arachnoid tissue from the trapped nerve. This fully relieved nerve compression while minimizing surgical trauma. Unlike standard microvascular decompression (MVD), which typically implants padding between nerves and vessels, this procedure focused on releasing tethering caused by abnormal arachnoid fibrosis.

Post‑op follow‑up supports long‑term research

The child experienced zero pain episodes after surgery. The team asked her family to continue documenting pain logs for three months post-discharge to collect clinical data for research on this rare pediatric disorder.

This operation demands masterful mastery of posterior fossa microanatomy and advanced microsurgical skills. Sichuan Taikang Hospital’s Neurosurgery department routinely performs microvascular decompression to treat functional cranial nerve disorders including trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

The department is equipped with high-end surgical microscopes and neuroelectrophysiological monitoring systems to deliver top-tier care for cranial nerve patients nationwide.

Expert Reminder: Watch for Recurrent Facial and Ear Pain

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia mostly affects middle-aged and elderly adults; childhood cases are extremely uncommon. Typical symptoms include paroxysmal sharp pain in the tongue root, throat, tonsils, ear roots and lower jaw. Cases featuring primary pain in the inner ears and eye sockets, like this girl’s, are exceptionally rare.

While headaches, toothaches, throat and ear pain are common daily complaints, recurring persistent discomfort requires medical attention. • Ralph’s Bar recently made history as the very first bar from Chengdu to land on Asia’s 50 Best Bars, taking the No. 28 spot on the 2026 ranking.

• Tucked inside Taikoo Li, above the Ralph Lauren flagship store, this stylish spot brings classic‑American old‑club interiors and atmosphere to central Chengdu.

• For visitors, it offers an upscale place for evening drinks and a full dining experience. It marks an important milestone: Chengdu’s modern cocktail scene is now recognised across all of Asia.

Designed with warm dark wood, leather decor and vintage artwork, it feels quiet and sophisticated, a sharp contrast to Chengdu’s busy street‑food nightlife. Its cocktail menu was created in collaboration with award‑winning bar Hope & Sesame, mixing fine whiskeys and creative signature drinks alongside classic cocktails.

Drawing inspiration from Ralph Lauren’s personal favourites, the venue serves authentic Polo‑Bar‑style American cuisine. Seasonal dishes range from a crispy chopped salad and crab cakes to a corned beef sandwich, steak, and the standout signature Polo Bar Burger – a juicy, must‑try menu highlight. Guests can also finish their evening with rich, indulgent desserts.

• We’ve recently found a fantastic hidden spot in Chengdu serving great-value smoothies, mocktails and cocktails. Tucked away in Yulin – one of Chengdu’s coolest neighbourhoods – this hidden gem blends two distinct vibes into one space: wholesome fresh smoothies by day, and refined craft cocktails after dark.

• Hælu Grëne’s affordable smoothies range from ¥25 to ¥38, blended fresh with fruits, vegetables, nuts and other natural ingredients. By night, the space transforms with warm, low lighting, serving a curated selection of premium craft cocktails. An extra plus: the shop’s welcoming owner Miles speaks English.

One Spot, Two Tastes

When Miles moved back to Chengdu after spending 20 years in Beijing as a mixologist in some of city’s best bars, he decided he wanted to do something different. His new shop in Yulin serves both hi-quality craft smoothies and cocktails, definitely worth stopping by.

By day, Hælu Grëne serves 30+ different affordable smoothies, priced from ¥25 to ¥38. Unlike sugary fruit drinks, every blend serves as convenient nourishment made from whole, natural ingredients.

By night, Hælu Cocktail offers an extensive list of craft cocktails, priced from ¥60 to ¥80.
