1 Day Wonders – Day Trips Around Chengdu

One of the best things about living in Chengdu is how easy it is to travel. In just a few hours, you can reach somewhere beautiful. Western Sichuan has some stunning hikes, and scenic spots – and whilst some of them require long bus rides through hilly highways, here are some places to escape to, just for the day;

Leshan Giant Buddha 乐山

Leshan is one of the most popular day trips from Chengdu and is best known for the UNESCO-listed Leshan Giant Buddha. However, there’s much more to discover than the famous statue. The city is also home to centuries-old temples, peaceful riverside scenery and one of Sichuan’s best local food scenes, making it an excellent destination for a full-day escape.

Start your visit early to avoid the largest crowds at the Giant Buddha Scenic Area. While walking down the narrow cliffside path beside the Buddha is an unforgettable experience, queues can be very long on weekends and public holidays. Alternatively, take a sightseeing boat from across the river for panoramic views of the world’s largest stone Buddha. Afterwards, spend some time exploring the surrounding temples, gardens and walking trails before heading into the city centre for lunch.

Giant Buddha in Leshan

Leshan is famous throughout Sichuan for its local dishes. Be sure to try Qiaojiao Beef (翘脚牛肉), Leshan Sweet Skin Duck (甜皮鸭), Bobo Chicken (钵钵鸡) and Tofu Pudding (豆腐脑), all of which are local specialities that have made the city a favourite destination for food lovers.

Discounted tickets are available for eligible children, students and seniors with valid identification.

Opening Hours

The scenic area is generally open daily from 7:30 AM to 6:30 PM, although opening hours may vary slightly depending on the season and public holidays. It’s always worth checking the official website before travelling.

How to Get There from Chengdu

The fastest and most convenient option is the high-speed train from Chengdu East Railway Station to Leshan Railway Station. The journey takes about one hour, with frequent departures throughout the day. From the railway station, local buses, taxis and ride-hailing services provide easy access to the Giant Buddha Scenic Area.

Alternatively, coaches operate regularly between Chengdu and Leshan from major bus stations. Travel times and departure schedules may vary, so checking the latest timetable before your journey is recommended.

Travel Tip

If possible, visit on a weekday and arrive early in the morning. You’ll enjoy shorter queues, cooler temperatures and a more relaxed experience. Before returning to Chengdu, leave some time to explore Leshan’s local restaurants and street food stalls, which are widely regarded as some of the best in Sichuan.

Emei Shan 峨眉山

Emei Shan is one of the most rewarding day trips from Chengdu, combining spectacular mountain scenery, ancient temples and centuries of Buddhist history. As one of China’s Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it attracts visitors throughout the year. Whether you enjoy hiking, photography or cultural attractions, Emei Shan offers something for everyone.

Most visitors begin their journey at Baoguo Temple, the main entrance to the scenic area. From here, sightseeing buses connect the major attractions across the mountain, while several walking trails lead through forests, temples and scenic viewpoints. If you’re planning to reach the Golden Summit, allow plenty of time, as it usually takes a full day to explore the mountain comfortably.

If you prefer a more relaxing experience, the hot springs near Baoguo Temple are a great way to end your visit. Lingxiu Hot Spring is one of the area’s most popular choices, offering indoor and outdoor mineral pools surrounded by peaceful mountain scenery.

Opening Hours

The scenic area is generally open daily, although operating hours for sightseeing buses, cable cars and individual attractions may vary depending on the season. It is recommended to check the latest information before your visit.

How to Get There from Chengdu

The fastest option is the high-speed train from Chengdu East Railway Station to Emeishan Railway Station, with a journey time of approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 20 minutes. From the railway station, local buses, scenic shuttle buses and taxis provide convenient connections to Baoguo Temple, the main entrance to the mountain.

Alternatively, regular coaches also operate between Chengdu and Emei City throughout the day. Departure times may vary, so checking the latest timetable before travelling is recommended.

Travel Tip

If you’re visiting during weekends or public holidays, arrive as early as possible to avoid long queues for sightseeing buses and cable cars. Wear comfortable walking shoes, carry water and dress in layers, as temperatures at the summit are often much cooler than in Chengdu.

Chengdu Greenway 成都绿道

Not every great day trip requires leaving the city. The Chengdu Greenway offers a completely different way to experience Chengdu, combining parks, lakes, wetlands and quiet cycling paths into one of the world’s longest urban greenway networks.

Stretching for around 100 kilometres, the Tianfu Greenway circles much of the city and connects dozens of ecological parks, rivers and recreational areas. Whether you enjoy cycling, jogging or simply taking a leisurely walk, it’s an excellent place to spend a relaxing day outdoors. Unlike Chengdu’s busy tourist attractions, the Greenway provides a quieter side of the city where you can enjoy nature at your own pace.

Most visitors choose to cycle only part of the route rather than completing the entire loop. Shared bikes are widely available, while several rental shops offer higher-quality bicycles for longer rides. Along the way, you’ll find cafés, rest areas, convenience stores and scenic viewpoints, making it easy to stop whenever you like.

If you’re looking for shorter routes, these two sections are among the most popular:

East to South (Approx. 30 km)

Route: Qinglong Lake Wetland Park → Yushi Wetland → Jiangjiayiyuan → Bailuwan Wetland → Zhonghe Wetland → Guixi Ecological Park → Jincheng Lake

Cycling Time: Around 2 hours (3–4 hours with sightseeing stops)

Southwest to East (Approx. 38 km)

Route: Jinhua Station → Mengchong Park → Yuedong Cailin → Jincheng Lake → Guixi Ecological Park → Zhonghe Wetland → Bailuwan Wetland → Jiangjiayiyuan → Yushi Wetland → Qinglong Lake Wetland Park

How to Get There

The Greenway can be accessed from many different locations across Chengdu. Some of the most convenient entry points include Jincheng Lake, Qinglong Lake Wetland Park and Global Center, all of which are easily reached by metro, taxi or ride-hailing services.

Travel Tip

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for cycling. If you’re visiting during summer, start early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day. Bringing water, sunscreen and a portable phone charger will make your ride much more enjoyable.

Flower Town 三圣花乡

Flower Town (Sansheng Flower Township) is one of the easiest and most relaxing day trips from Chengdu. Located just a short drive from the city centre, this peaceful area has grown from a traditional flower-growing village into a popular destination for cafés, gardens, local markets and weekend leisure activities.

Today, visitors come here to enjoy quiet walks, cycle through the surrounding countryside or spend a few hours relaxing in one of the many cafés and restaurants. The area is particularly popular during spring, when colourful flowers are in bloom, although it remains a pleasant place to visit throughout the year.

One of the highlights is the local flower market, where you can browse a wide variety of plants, flowers and gardening supplies. The nearby cafés and barbecue restaurants also make Flower Town a favourite gathering place for families and groups of friends. If you’re interested in art, you’ll also find galleries and creative spaces nearby, adding another reason to spend the day exploring the area.

By Bus: Several local bus routes also serve the area, making it an affordable option for visitors travelling without a car.

Travel Tip

Flower Town is busiest on weekends and public holidays. For a quieter experience, visit on a weekday or arrive early in the morning. If you enjoy photography, spring and autumn are the best seasons to capture the area’s colourful gardens and peaceful countryside.

Huanglongxi Ancient Town 黄龙溪镇

Huanglongxi Ancient Town is one of the most popular day trips from Chengdu for anyone interested in history, traditional architecture and local culture. Located around 40 kilometres from the city centre, this well-preserved ancient town dates back more than 1,700 years and offers a glimpse into Sichuan’s past.

Walking through the old streets, you’ll find traditional courtyard houses, historic temples, stone bridges and riverside teahouses. The town is also known for its relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal place to spend a leisurely day exploring on foot. Along the main streets, you’ll discover local snacks, handicraft shops and cafés, while the riverside is a popular spot for enjoying tea or taking a short boat ride.

Huanglongxi is also a favourite filming location for Chinese historical dramas. As a result, it’s common to see visitors dressed in traditional Hanfu, especially during weekends and festivals, creating a lively and photogenic atmosphere.

By Taxi or Didi: A taxi or ride-hailing service offers the most convenient option, especially if you’re travelling with family or a group of friends.

Travel Tip

Weekdays are generally quieter than weekends, allowing you to explore the old streets at a more relaxed pace. If you plan to stay until the evening, you’ll be able to enjoy the town after many day visitors have left, when the traditional streets become even more peaceful.

Qingcheng Mountain 青城山

Qingcheng Mountain is one of the most scenic and culturally significant day trips from Chengdu. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, it is widely regarded as one of the birthplaces of Taoism. The mountain is known for its peaceful forests, ancient Taoist temples and well-maintained hiking trails, making it a favourite destination for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.

The scenic area is divided into Front Mountain (Qianshan) and Back Mountain (Houshan). Front Mountain is home to many of the historic Taoist temples and cultural landmarks, while Back Mountain offers a quieter experience with waterfalls, forests and longer hiking routes. If you’re visiting for the first time, Front Mountain is usually the better choice, especially if you have only one day.

Travel Tip

Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry plenty of water, especially if you plan to hike instead of using the cable car. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit, offering pleasant temperatures and some of the mountain’s most beautiful scenery.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System 都江堰

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is one of the most remarkable engineering achievements in China and one of the most rewarding day trips from Chengdu. Built more than 2,200 years ago by Li Bing and his son, this UNESCO World Heritage Site continues to regulate water and irrigate the Chengdu Plain today. Its innovative design transformed the region into the famous “Land of Abundance” and remains in use without the need for a dam.

Visitors can explore the site’s most famous landmarks, including Yuzui Bifurcation Dam, Feisha Weir, Baopingkou Waterway, Anlan Suspension Bridge and Erwang Temple. The scenic area combines impressive engineering with beautiful riverside scenery, making it an enjoyable destination for both history lovers and photographers.

Allow at least half a day to explore the site at a comfortable pace. If time permits, consider combining your visit with nearby Qingcheng Mountain, as the two attractions are located only a short distance apart and are often visited together.

Mount Tiantai 天台山

Mount Tiantai is an excellent day trip from Chengdu for visitors who enjoy nature, waterfalls and outdoor activities. Located in Qionglai, this scenic mountain is known for its dense forests, clear streams and impressive waterfall landscape. Along the way, you’ll pass waterfalls, suspension bridges, mountain streams and forest viewpoints, making it an enjoyable destination even if you don’t plan to complete the entire route. In addition to its natural beauty, Mount Tiantai is home to several Taoist sites that add cultural interest to the visit.

A City of Deep History and Culture

Any complete Chengdu travel guide must highlight the city’s rich history, which spans over 2,000 years. It was once the center of the ancient Shu Kingdom and played a key role in Chinese history. Today, you can still see its rich past at places like Wuhou Shrine, Qingyang Palace, and the peaceful Wenshu Monastery. You can also walk through the Wide and Narrow Alleys (Kuan Zhai Xiangzi) to experience life during the Qing Dynasty, with traditional teahouses, old-style homes, and tasty street snacks.

What’s the Weather Like in Chengdu?

Chengdu has a mild, humid climate with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and often rainy, while winters are cold and damp, but rarely see snow. One thing to note is that air pollution can be a concern in winter, when coal is burned for heating across China. During this time, air quality can reach PM2.5 levels over 150.

👉 Here’s how to stay safe during winter pollution in Chengdu. We recommend checking daily air quality with the Smart Air app or the American Consulate, wearing a good mask outdoors, and using an air purifier indoors.

The Home of the Giant Panda

Chengdu is famous for being the home of giant pandas, one of China’s national symbols. At the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, millions of people visit each year to see pandas eat, sleep, and play. The city works hard to protect these animals, making it a great place for animal lovers. Want to see more nature? Try a day trip around Chengdu to places like Mount Qingcheng or the Leshan Giant Buddha.

A Culinary Paradise

The top WeChat Groups guaranteed to keep you in the loop in Chengdu.

Love or hate the constant notifications and occasional spamming from WeChat groups, there’s not many of us that could survive in Chengdu without them because some are seriously obscene (The Yellow Fever group I’m looking at you) whilst others are a little niche (Chengdu Cat Appreciators) however they all play a part in keeping us up-to-date and entertained.

Chengdu Foodies
foodfingers

The focus of this foodie circle is to discuss food in Chengdu and share where to find bargains therefore now numerous restaurant owners, hotels and bars offer discounts in their kitchens for group members.

What we say:
This is undoubtedly one of our favourite groups on WeChat because you can get some real steals in some of Chengdu’s finest eateries and on delivery services too. However… it must be said, the real joy from this group is from all the foodie infighting: on the menu it says ibérico ham BUT THERE’S NO WAY THAT PIG WAS FED ON ACORNS – so you better know your foie gras from your fougasse! Also, hurry this group only has 40 places left!

What they say:
GROUP/DISCOUNT RULES
You must show your phone to staff or management.
Only for Chengdu Food Finders Group.

You can only advertise in this group if you supply a discount.
Don’t be sly and try to advertise indirectly.
If you would like to advertise in this group PM me directly.
This group was originally set up for people who found bargains or discounts on western food, but it has evolved. If you as an individual find a bargain or discount either in a supermarket or restaurant please post.
Please be polite and courteous to other group members.

Chengdu Expats

chengdu-expat-chengdu-expatsA general purpose community group for expats living in Chengdu.

What we say:
This group was started a few years ago in Chengdu and is extremely useful if you want to ask general questions about Chengdu, find a hairdresser, sell your things, find an apartment – it’s a good place to ask to be placed into other groups or have someone’s contact card shared.

What they say:
Thank you for joining the Chengdu Expat group. The main goal of this group is to strengthen the expat community here in Chengdu. Get to know new people, share your knowledge, give your opinion, help each other out, etc.. but most importantly respect each other. Please use only English as everyone here speaks mainly English. Discrimination, ads, job posts and stickers are forbidden and will result in a direct ban from the group.

Feel free inviting your friend over and thank you for respecting the group rules!

CD-Expat Buy & Sell

chengdu-expat-buy-and-sell
A forum for buying and selling mostly used or difficult to find items in Chengdu.

What we say:
Living in a community where people’s average stay is only a year or two, there is a constant stream of people leaving. But equally this means there are always new people appearing hoping to set up shop, needing new things, so the market for second hand goods in Chengdu is great – this group is useful if you’re looking to buy or sell a bike, a coffee machine, furniture, your old HSK books and more.

What they say:
Well, Hello!  This is an English speaking group – Please use common sense and keep conversation on topic . If not, you’re out. Many thanks!

Cd-Expat Sports

chengdu-expat-sports-groupThis is a relatively new group for finding out about sporting equipment and activities in Chengdu.

What we say:
This group is strictly moderated by the Chengdu-Expat team and is a forum to ask questions about where to find facilities, equipment and a place to find out about sporting events. The best thing about this group, is you can normally find like minded people to go hiking, swimming or bike riding with. There is a strict restriction on 1 post per event rule, so it’s not too spammy!

What they say:
Well, Hello!  This is an English speaking group – Please use common sense and keep conversation on topic . If not, you’re out. Many thanks!

CD-Expat Jobs (No teaching/Modelling)

chengdu-expat-jobs
A group to advertising jobs, with the exception of teaching and modelling.

What we say:
This is a great place to look or advertise for specialist workers such as translators and artists, outside of the usual white face teaching or modelling jobs in most other job groups – it’s very tightly moderated. Note, there is another Chengdu-Expat run group that is specifically geared towards teaching if that is what you are looking for.

What they say:
Like with all Chengdu-Expat run  groups – Well, Hello!  This is an English speaking group – Please use common sense and keep conversation on topic . If not, you’re out. Many thanks!

Because China.

chengdu-expat-because-china
A group to remind you of the insanity that is China.

What we say:
The fact you’ve just read a whole article about the best WeChat groups in Chengdu means you already appreciate the wackier side of China. This group shares pictures, sights, memes and stories about the daily insanity that unfolds on China’s streets; a man dangling his baby into a tiger enclosure, an employee sitting in the freezer at Wowo on his laptop or the many Chinglish signs around Chengdu. Because…China.

What they say:
Nothing. There are clearly no words necessary.

Foreigners leaving China permanently need more than just to finish their jobs. Our curated 2026 guide delivers essential practical tips to fully prepare your exit from China.

14. Withdraw Social Insurance
15. Withdraw Housing Fund
16. Handle Individual Income Tax
17. Personal Income Tax Payment Certificate

1) Cancel the Accounts

Your Chinese phone number is crucial for accessing apps like Alipay or WeChat linked to your bank.
Failing to cancel the accounts linked with your number before departing from China may run into problems, especially if it is associated with your passport number.
If the phone bill remains unpaid for an extended period (6 months), the number might be reassigned, and others could potentially access your accounts.
So it’s necessary to unbind your phone number from all associated applications and services or cancel the accounts linked to the number.*For SkyRemit, you can add your email as an additional sign-in method in the account settings first and unbind your phone number with the assistance of customer support.

2) Cancel Phone SIM Card

Decide if you want to keep your Chinese phone number active.

Keep the phone number

Downgrade to the cheapest plan that will keep your account active (China Mobile is about 18 CNY per month).
Keeping your phone number allows you to continue using services associated with itsuch as Alipay and banking apps, even after departing from China.
You can simply switch your phone to airplane mode and connect to Wi-Fi when necessary, eliminating the need for a mobile data plan.
Using SkyRemit requires access to Chinese banking apps and services like WeChat or Alipay, which may need your phone number for verification.

Cancel the phone number

If you have settled all matters before departure, including the remittance of your salary, you can choose to cancel your mobile phone number.
The materials required for cancelling a mobile phone number may vary by city, it is recommended that you contact the customer service of the relevant telecom operatorsto clarify the requirements before visiting a local telecommunications business hall.
The customer service numbers are as follows:
China Mobile: 10086
China Unicom: 10010
China Telecom: 10000
*If the SIM card is not cancelled, it will continue to be charged by the Chinese provider. In addition, after 90 days, the provider will take back the number and blacklist you. This will cause problems for you to apply for a new SIM card later.

3) Off-lease Procedure

Before leaving China, foreigners need to communicate with the landlord to handle the rental deposit or get reimbursement of housing subsidies from your company. Due to the visa time, it is better to plan in advance.

4) Transferring Funds Out of China

Worried about missing bank visits before leaving?
Concerned about accessing RMB after you’re gone?
Use SkyRemit to transfer RMB overseas anytime – before departure or after you’ve left – 100% online. Eliminate last-minute bank runs!
Simple 3-Step Setup (Better Complete in China):
1.  Sign up on SkyRemit
2.  Upload documents (one-time):
• Valid passport & work permit
• Income tax payment records(Approval grants long-term transfer access)
3.  Initiate a transfer• Supports 195+ destinations & 43+ currencies

Scan to Check and Sign Up

Why Choose SkyRemit?
1. 24/7 Accessibility
• Transfers 365 days/year – no Chinese holiday restrictions
2.  Competitive Rates
• Uses XE.com mid-mark
3.  Fast Delivery• 80% transfers in 24-48hrs; select currencies in 30min4. Fully Licensed

5) Cancel Broadband

For all broadband services, if you no longer use them, need to bring your passport and internet device to the business hall to cancel your account before leaving China.
Otherwise, there will be further fees incurred. If you do not actively cancel your account, you will bear the expenses incurred.

6) Get the Contacts

Collect the email addresses and phone numbers of those you wish to stay in touch with, especially close friends and professional contacts. Make sure they have your contact information as well.
This is important because if you ever need to deactivate WeChat or if it becomes unusable due to regulatory changes in the future, you’ll still have a way to reach out to your friends.
For any former supervisors or managers, and anyone who could serve as a reference for a job, obtain their contact details and ensure they have yours too. This will be beneficial for maintaining professional relationships and networking.

7) Pet Affairs

If you decide to leave China with your pet, you need to prepare the following:
1. Booking Flight Tickets
Before purchasing flight tickets, confirm with the airline whether the desired flight has pet-in-cabin or oxygen-supply cargo hold spaces. Currently, pet tickets can only be confirmed by calling customer service.
After confirming the suitable flight, it is recommended to buy the tickets as soon as possible due to limited spots, especially during peak travel seasons. It is advisable to purchase pet tickets at least two months in advance for more options.
2. Preparation of Vaccination Certificate
More than one month before departure, ensure your pet’s rabies vaccine is valid within one year; if it is about to expire, it is recommended to get a booster shot one month before takeoff.
Veterinarians recommend waiting at least one month after vaccination before undertaking long flights.
3. Animal Health Certificate Issued by Customs (Valid for 5 Days)

Sample of the certificate

If you prefer not to go through the hassle, you can entrust a pet exit service agency through online forums, social media groups, or pet adoption websites such as RED, Xian Yu or related WeChat official accounts.
One month before departure, call the local customs hotline 12360 to inquire about the process, required documents, time, and location for handling (which may vary slightly by region).
*Note, the customs hotline does not offer English services.
If you decide not to take your pet with you when leaving China, there are several options for finding a new home for your pet.
1.  Friends or relatives
Find a new loving home for your pet by contacting friends, family, or colleagues who may be willing to adopt.
2.  Online Platforms
Utilize online forums, social media groups, or pet adoption websites such as RED, Xian Yu or related WeChat official accounts to find potential adopters.

8) Bucket List

Dive into your bucket list of activities you’ve always dreamed of experiencing in China but never found the time for.
Whether it’s walking along the Great Wall, exploring the historic Forbidden City, or tasting authentic street food in bustling markets, countless adventures are waiting for you.
Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in cultural festivals, traditional tea ceremonies, and ancient temples.
These unique experiences offer a glimpse into a rich heritage and lifestyle that you won’t easily find outside of China. Enjoy every moment and create unforgettable memories.

9) Recommendation Letter

Sample of recommendation letter

In the following conditions, you may need a recommendation letter.
a. Work or Study: If foreigners are working or studying in Chinese companies or schools, and need recommendation letters to apply for work or study opportunities in other countries, then recommendation letters may be necessary
.b. Visa Application: In some cases, foreigners may need recommendation letters as part of the visa application process, especially when applying for work or student visas.
c. Professional Certification: Certain professional fields may require foreigners to continue working in related jobs after leaving China, and in such cases, recommendation letters may be needed to prove their professional capabilities and experience.
d. Personal Development: Recommendation letters can sometimes be part of personal development, such as applying for scholarships, attending professional conferences, or engaging in academic exchanges.
e. Other Specific Purposes: In some specific situations, such as applying for certain specific projects or opportunities, recommendation letters may be required.
There are strict regulations on the content of the recommendation letter, such as the job position, working time, and signature and seal of recommender or official seal.

10) Employment Separation Certificate

Sample of employment separation certificate

Before leaving a company in China, you should ask for a certificate of separation or work experience from the company.
This certificate should have your name, passport number, job dates, job title, company contact info, and the company’s stamp.
If you want to work in China again or need a work permit, this certificate is very important. Following the Labor Contract Law, the company must give the employee a separation certificate.
As you might need a notarized work certificate when applying for jobs or permanent residency in another country in the future, it’s also a good idea to get this certificate notarized.

11) Work Permit Cancellation Certificate

Sample of work permit cancellation certificate

There are two situations:
a. If your last working day is on or close to the work permit’s expiration date(e.g., within 3 days of the expiration date), you don’t need to cancel the work permit (because cancellation must be done a few days before you leave).
b. If there is a long gap between your last working day and the work permit’s expiration(e.g., more than 30 days), you must cancel the work permit and get a cancellation certificate from the Bureau of Foreign Experts Affairs.
If you return to China in a short period and apply for a domestic work permit transfer, this certificate must be provided.
Work Permit Cancellation Materials:
① Application for cancellation of work permit
② Termination certificate or termination certificate
③ Non-meeting Commitment (if applicable, can be submitted to complete the application online)

12) Apply for T Visa

Sample of T visa

After obtaining the work permit cancellation certificate, you can apply for a stay visa from the exit and entry department of the Public Security Bureau, and the duration of the stay visa will be determined based on the specific circumstances, usually 30 days.

13

Non-Criminal Record

Sample of non-criminal record

Obtaining a certificate of non-criminal record typically requires the applicant’s presence. If you have already left China, the materials needed for agent handling will be more complicated.
Foreigners in China usually need to meet the following conditions and requirements when applying for a certificate of no criminal record:
a. Residence Time Requirement: The cumulative residence in China must reach 180 days (inclusive) or more.
b. Personal application material needed on site (taking Shenzhen as an example):
①Original passport
②Temporary residence registration form
Sample of temporary residence registration form 临时住宿登记表样本
③application form (fill and sign on site)
*Please note that many foreigners do not update their records after renewing their residence permits or changing their addresses, which leads to discontinuous residence periods in the system and makes it impossible to process a certificate of no criminal record.
请注意,不少人每次在更新居留许可或变更地址后并未更新填表,导致系统里的居住时间不连续而无法办理无犯罪证明。
c. Application Department: An application should be submitted to the immigration administration department at or above the county level where the applicant resides.
3. 申请部门:应向居住地的县级以上出入境管理局提出申请。
d. Processing Time: Generally, it takes 5-10 working days to complete the process.4. 办理时间:一般情况下,办理时长为5-10个工作日办结。
If you have left China, materials needed for agent:
① The Chinese visa page of passport and residence period, must be authenticated by the Chinese Embassy or consulate.
② Temporary Accommodation registration form.
③ The power of attorney, must be certified by the Chinese Embassy or consulate.
Suppose the certificate is to be used abroad. In that case, obtaining two to three notarized copies of the certificate from a notary office after receiving it is recommended to be prepared for unforeseen needs.

14

Withdraw Social Insurance

Please be aware that you can only apply for social security surrender once the company has stopped your payments.
Generally, if the social security for the current month has been paid, the company can only stop the payments in the last few days of the month. Therefore, please plan your time carefully.
Offline Social Security Bureau window application:(taking Shenzhen as an example)
Documents needed of withdrawing Social Insurance:
① Passport
② A bank card issued in China’s Mainland
③ Work permit cancellation certificate or separation certificate
④ Financial social security card, no need if not available
⑤ Social insurance relationship settlement application form (signed by the insured, such as the unit agent, need to stamp official seal if company handled it instead of.)
The application form is as follows:
Q: How much money can I claim back?
A: You can log in to the personal social security system account to inquire, or to the Social Security Bureau front window to inquire. Any part paid by an individual can apply for withdrawal.

15) Withdraw Housing Fund

If your company has purchased the housing fund for you, you can withdraw the balance of all the housing fund before leaving.
For housing fund withdrawal, you can apply online or offline. It is recommended to apply offlineas online applications do not have the option of departure withdrawal and usually take several months to receive.
Online Apply: You can try searching for ‘公积金提取’ on Alipay, but if that doesn’t work out, we recommend going offline to handle it.
Offline application for the withdrawal of housing fund material (taking Shenzhen as an example):
① Original passport
② Original Housing fund card (if no, use other Chinese bank cards instead)③ Housing Fund Withdrawal business personal authorization, commitment letter (fill in bank window site)

16) Handle Individual Income Tax

Individuals in China are responsible for personal income tax. Before leaving, verify your tax records to ensure your employer has fully withheld and paid the corresponding personal income tax for you.
If there’s a shortfall, coordinate with your employer to settle it promptly to avoid late fees, penalties, and credit damage in China. Seeking help from a tax professional or service is advisable.
If your taxpayer status changes before departure: a resident becomes a non-resident, or a non-resident becomes a resident, resulting in a discrepancy between the tax paid and the tax payable, in this case, you need to go to the tax Bureau for a tax refund before departure.
If you are a resident taxpayer and you have used the eight eligible subsidy policies to refund the tax in the following year, you need to prepare relevant information before leaving the country.
If you have used the qualified rent subsidy, you need to collect the rent invoice, lease contract and other information before leaving the country, to handle the personal settlement from March to June of the following year. Provide supporting documents to the tax office.

17) Personal Income Tax Payment Certificate

Sample of the certificate

To comply with tax obligations in your home country or a third country where you may work, it’s advisable to secure documentation of your income and tax payments from your employment in China before you leave.
This proof of tax payment can be essential for demonstrating compliance with tax laws in other jurisdictions.

• As most people are aware of, foreign nationals must register at the local Chengdu police station within 24 hours:1. Upon first arrival in Chengdu
2. When changing residential address
3. When obtaining a new visa or residence permit

• Late registration may result in fines, and failure to comply can lead to fines or serious penalties.
NOTE: After you return from abroad after each trip, you are NO longer to required to re-register, as long as you’re returning to the same address before vacation.
Since 2020 you able to register both at your local police station (派出所) OR online, although the online system is quite buggy.

• Below is more information about both the offline and online registration process:

Register within 24 hours

Per China’s Exit-Entry Administration Law Article 39, foreigners staying outside hotels in Chengdu must finish police accommodation registration within 24 hours for first arrival, address changes, or new visa updates.

Re-registration is no longer needed when returning from abroad to your same registered home address under the latest 2026 updated rules. Late registration may lead to a warning or fine up to 2000 yuan, though a common 10-day grace period applies in practice.

We would definitely recommend you to do this within 24 hours, although it seems no fine will be implemented if you go before 10 days of landing.

Further info on the process:

Register Offline

Let’s hope your HR helps out with this… because it’s often needs a lot of paper work.  For the registration, you usually need to (each time you return) hand in a copy of the following documents at the local police station or community center:
1) Passport + visa pages + last entry date stamp
2) Valid rental contract (房屋租赁合同)
3) Real estate certificate (房权证) + copy of landlord’s ID card (房东身份证复印件)

After you checked if all information is correct, you will receive a “Registration voucher of residence for visitors from overseas”, the authority needs to stamp it. Keep this document, as you might need it for your visa process. Do not throw it away.

Register Online

Here’s How to Survive Winter Pollution in Chengdu

• Winter is well and truly on the way in Chengdu, and with this icy blast of weather, we’ve been blessed with another winter special; grey skies, and high AQI. Chengdu generally experiences quite high levels of pollution in winter: a mix of increased power usage, motor pollution, close proximity to industry, and unlucky topography are just a few reasons why. The winter tends to bring the highest AQI (Air Quality Index) readings, causing hard-to-ignore damage to both our health and our moods.

• But it must be said that because of government efforts to move factories out of residential areas, amongst other things, it has, on average, gotten better over the years. Unlike some regions in China’s Northeast, which experience huge peaks and troughs, Chengdu generally has a continuous moderate-to-high pollution level throughout the season.

• Whilst we don’t all have the luxury of escaping the city when it gets bad, we are luckily more equipped than ever to monitor and protect ourselves from pollutants. As awareness increases of the dangers of PM2.5s (small particles believed to be the most damaging to our health), so does the range of products and services that can help – and some are more affordable than you’d think.

• The pollution can be especially dangerous for sensitive groups: children, the elderly and pregnant women. Here are some tips to keep safe this winter:

1) Know the Air Quality

Living in Chengdu means learning to deal with seasonal air pollution. Fortunately, we’re better equipped than ever to monitor and protect ourselves from harmful pollutants.

As awareness grows about the dangers of PM2.5 particles—tiny pollutants that are most damaging to our health—so does the variety of tools available to help. Many of these tools are more affordable than you might expect.

Your well-being during high pollution days depends on making smart decisions. That’s why it’s essential to check the air quality daily

Use Smart Monitors and Apps

Some air purifiers can display indoor air quality, but their sensors only measure the air near the device—not where you’re actually sitting or sleeping. To get a more accurate picture, consider using stand-alone smart monitors. These devices vary in price and can measure different pollutants.

One of the easiest ways to stay informed is to download a free air quality app. Apps like Air Matters: Global Air Quality & Pollen Data are available for both iOS and Android. We like this one because it provides real-time readings from different districts in Chengdu and even lets you compare data from other cities around the world.

You can also visit dedicated air quality websites or follow @CGChengduAir on Twitter, which tweets regular pollution updates.

Our Favorite Device: The Laser Egg

For simplicity and value, we recommend the Laser Egg by Kaiterra. Although discontinued in 2022, it’s still available on platforms like Taobao for around 800 RMB.

The Laser Egg shows PM2.5 readings on a bright LED screen, which means there’s no need to constantly check your phone. You can sync it to an app if you like, but it also works unplugged, making it easy to measure air quality on the go. Plus, its Mini-Program adds extra convenience.

2) Wear A Mask…and make it a good one

Since Covid-19, many of us know more about masks than before. Terms like FFP2 and N95 can be confusing, but they indicate how well a mask filters airborne particles.

Understanding Mask Standards

European standards (EN143 & EN149) classify masks as FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3. These remove 80%, 94%, and 99% of particles respectively. American standards use N95, N99, and N100, which remove 95%, 99%, and 100%.

Recommended Masks and Options

We usually recommend 3M N95 masks. These are the gold standard for disposable masks and cost around 80 RMB for 50 masks on JD.com. Another option is Vogmask, a Californian company making high-quality fabric masks. They offer about 200 hours of protection and cost between 80 and 200 RMB on Taobao.com.

Masks for Outdoor Activities

Wearing a mask outdoors is important, especially when cycling or running along busy roads or near construction. Respro masks work well, but beware of fakes on Taobao. Totobobo also makes masks with replaceable filters. Although currently sold out on JD.com, we found them less comfortable. ID Masks claim to specialize in masks that allow better airflow during runs. They might be worth trying.

Fit Matters Most

No matter which mask you choose, fit is crucial. It must seal well with no gaps to prevent air leakage. Many videos online show how to fit masks properly. Take time to learn the correct way to wear yours.

3) Purify the Air in Your Home & Office

Choose the Right Air Purifier for Your Space

Start by buying an air purifier that fits your room size. Most purifiers show a recommended room area (适用面积) in square meters or list an airflow rate called CADR (风机空载风量), measured in cubic meters per hour.

An effective purifier should replace the air in your room about five times per hour. To estimate this, multiply your room’s floor area by its height, then multiply by five. Check if the purifier’s airflow rate meets or exceeds this number.

Recommended Air Purifiers

XiaoMi offers smart air purifiers starting from 250 RMB (lots of cheap second hand ones available). You can turn these on with your phone before you get home. They come in different sizes to suit various spaces.

Smart Air sells affordable models from 200 RMB, which work well in smaller rooms. (You can find them at smartairfilters.com.) Though less stylish, these units are effective.

How to Maximize Your Air Purifier’s Effectiveness

Air purifiers typically take about ten minutes to become effective after turning on. To get the best results, seal your windows with polythene sheets and close your doors to prevent air leaks.

Also, monitor your purifier’s filters. Some filters become more efficient with use, but others need replacing often. Make sure you change them as needed to maintain good air quality.

Other Ways to Help Purify Your Home

There is a lot of misinformation about plants and other natural methods for cleaning air. Unfortunately, these do not protect you against PM2.5 particles.

However, NASA research shows that certain plants, like Spider Plants (Chlorophytum comosum), Devil’s Ivy (Epipremnum aureum), Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum ‘Mauna Loa’), and Variegated Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), can help remove harmful chemicals like benzene and formaldehyde. They add beauty to your home but have limited impact on harmful air pollutants.

Some people believe beeswax candles and Himalayan salt lamps clean the air. We’ve put ours away with our dreamcatchers, as they don’t actually improve air quality.

4) Make Good Decisions to Minimize Pollution Exposure

While you can’t control the air quality outside, you can take steps to reduce your exposure.

Quit Smoking

This might seem obvious. However, in a city where smoking is cheap and deeply woven into dining and business culture, sitting in a bar without a cigarette might feel strange. Still, cutting out smoking is a sure way to improve your health.

Avoid Rush Hour

If you travel by bike or on foot, try to avoid busy roads during rush hours. The first and second ring roads and Renmin South Road are especially polluted between 4-7 pm. During this time, there are 5% more cars on the road than last year. Taking the subway to cross the city can greatly reduce your exposure to pollution.

Exercise Wisely

Opinions vary about when you should stop outdoor cardio based on the Air Quality Index (AQI). Some believe that exercising outside is better than not exercising at all, no matter the air quality. Whichever view you follow, it’s smart to monitor the AQI, time your workouts well, and choose side roads or river paths to avoid traffic fumes. Most gyms don’t have air purifiers yet, but indoor air usually contains about 50% less pollution than outdoor air.

A note from the editor: We know this winter might be tough for many people, who are spending another year away from family – which gets especially hard in the lead up to the holiday season. Remember, you are not alone if you’re feeling a bit down. Reach out to the community, take some vitamin D, get a TV box (those festive adverts!), and try to get some exercise. Spring will be here before you know it. We love you!

If you are unwell, you can:
– Check out our useful list of the most common western medicines with Chinese translations that you can purchase at the pharmacy.
