• Although it’s tempting, as you often see too-good-to-be-true offers for voice recording, tutoring, and film cameos – the general rule is NO.

For almost all visa types in China, part‑time and freelance paid work is basically NOT ALLOWED! This rule applies to tourist, business, student and Z work visas alike.

• A standard Chinese Z‑type work visa and matching work permit are legally bound to one single registered employer and one approved work location (even other branches of the same company are not allowed). Any paid work for other companies or private clients outside this designated employer or approved location counts as illegal employment, unless formal government approval is granted.

• Freelancing as an independent contractor does not exist as a legal status under China’s foreign‑employment regulatory framework. You should not take side gigs, private freelance commissions or casual after‑hours part‑time work for third‑party clients on your existing work permit. Working beyond the scope listed on your official work permit may trigger penalties including fines, deportation and future entry restrictions.

There are narrow exceptions where extra work can be lawful, but only under the following conditions:

1) Foreign student work‑study (only for student‑visa holders) 

Foreign students can perform limited part‑time internships or work‑study only when:

1. The university provides formal written consent;

2. Exit‑entry authorities annotate the work location and duration directly onto the student’s residence permit.

Unannotated paid work remains illegal employment for international students.

2) Secondary / part‑time work for existing work‑visa holders 

(no Chinese permanent‑residence “green card”)

If you hold a valid work permit tied to Company A and want to perform work for Company B, you cannot sign a direct personal employment contract with Company B. One compliant practical structure is for Company B to enter a formal business‑to‑business service agreement with Company A. Company B pays fees to Company A, and your compensation for the work delivered to Company B is disbursed through your primary employer, Company A.

Even under this B2B setup, formal administrative approval is still required from the local expert‑bureau authority (FEB/EEB, the department administering foreign‑worker permits).

The full conditions are as follows:

1. The secondary work for Company B must be fully related to your original job scope listed under your primary work permit. Unrelated side‑jobs will be rejected.

2. You need a formal working agreement covering the work with Party B, together with written endorsement / consent from your primary employer Party A.

3. Authorised representatives from both companies submit a joint application to the local foreign‑expert bureau. This is the process commonly used to legally allow teachers to deliver classes across two different school locations within one city.

4. After official government approval is issued, you must update your Work Permit. Depending on changes to working locations or terms, you will also need to amend your residence permit at public‑security exit‑entry bureaus.

Without this official written government approval, even if two companies have a private commercial contract, performing paid work for Company B is treated as illegal employment under Chinese law. Private side‑hustles, freelance commissions, informal moonlighting are not allowed regardless of working hours.

3) Chinese Permanent Residence (Green Card/ Five‑Star Card) holders

Foreigners holding China’s permanent‑residence fall under different rules. They enjoy greater freedom to take multiple jobs or freelance work without being locked to one single sponsoring employer.

Under the Exit‑Entry Administration Law of the People’s Republic of China, illegal employment may result in fines of RMB 5 000‑20 000. Serious cases can lead to detention, deportation and bans on future entry into China. The hiring entity can also face heavy administrative fines.

Any individual or company that connects foreigners with these unapproved side jobs is also breaking the law, for the same core reasons laid out above. Introducing foreigners to take on illegal paid work carries separate penalties: intermediaries can be fined for each person they place, and agencies running this kind of matching service can have their illegal gains confiscated. A job offer from a middleman does not make the work legal, even if they claim they have a workaround or “safe solution”.

Many casual paid projects foreigners are often approached for fall under this rule. This includes teaching or tutoring, modelling shoots, video recording or voice‑over speeches for commercial use, livestreaming appearances, short commercial clips, event host gigs, and brand promotional appearances. The key test is payment: if you receive money for the activity while you are physically in China, it counts as work.

Important nuance: This is different from a proper B2B service arrangement. If Company A has the correct business scope for the service, the work is covered under a formal company-to-company contract, and all payments flow via official company bank accounts, this structure can be compliant — but it still requires the prior foreign expert bureau approval we outlined above.

Over the past year, we have seen many foreigners in Chengdu run into trouble for this exact issue. Some of these people thought their small side activity was innocent, low-risk or “no big deal”. Investigations can pull up months of evidence: payment records, photos, video clips, social media posts and witness statements showing you performing work at different locations or for different clients. Outcomes range from heavy fines and lengthy administrative interviews, to detention, deportation and permanent entry bans for China, which can disrupt travel and career plans long-term. It is very easy to underestimate how strictly these rules are enforced.

On a typical morning in Chengdu International School’s Early Childhood Center, the sound of laughter and playing reaches the hallway before anything else does. It’s a small scene, but it shows a lot about how we approach our youngest learners.

Three- and four-year-olds learn by doing, so ECC days are built around building, pretending, exploring, moving, and a great deal of conversation. Teachers constantly ask questions like “What do you notice?” and “What do you think will happen next?”, because talking things through is how young children build language and explore the world around them. Children are encouraged to ask questions, make discoveries, express their ideas, and develop the confidence to try something new.

In Elementary, reading opens up the world.

Somewhere around first and second grade, students shift from learning to read to reading to learn. Chengdu International School uses Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), which teaches phonics and reading skills alongside rich content such as ancient civilizations, the human body, and folktales from around the world.

The idea is that strong readers need more than decoding skills. They also need vocabulary and background knowledge, which make harder texts easier to understand later. Alongside literacy, students study math, science, social studies, and Chinese, and they take specials including art, music, PE, library, and technology.

Moreover, Chengdu Museum is also recognized as the “National Shadow Puppetry Museum,” a title granted by the State Council in 2006. It is not only the first national museum in Sichuan but also the only one of its kind in Chengdu.

The museum spans around 65,000 square meters, with about 20,000 square meters dedicated to exhibitions. Inside, visitors will find three engaging permanent exhibitions. These include:

Originally, the temple was built in the year 221, during the reign of Liu Bei. It is a renowned memorial site for Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei, and other heroes of the Shu Han period in the Three Kingdoms era and is globally recognized as the most influential museum related to the Three Kingdoms heritage

Today, visitors can walk through peaceful courtyards. Meanwhile, they can learn about one of China’s most fascinating historical periods. With its deep roots and cultural importance, this museum offers a rich and memorable experience.

The Sanxingdui Museum is one of the must-visit museums near Chengdu. It shows an important Bronze Age site in Guanghan, about 40 kilometers from the city. This discovery helped us learn a lot about how people lived thousands of years ago.

Additionally, the museum’s expanded exhibition complex, which opened in 2023, features larger galleries and a significantly increased number of archaeological discoveries, making it one of China’s most impressive archaeology museums.

Sanxingdui displays around 1,000 artifacts, mostly bronze items. One of the most famous pieces is a bronze mask with a green and gold finish that looks almost alien. This mask became very popular after it was found a few years ago.

As a result, the discovery of Sanxingdui changed how historians think about early Chinese civilisation. Instead of growing from only the Yellow River area, many now believe China had multiple centers of culture and innovation. This makes Sanxingdui a fascinating place to visit.

The Sichuan Art Museum, along with the China Prints Museum within, boasts a collection exceeding 11,000 prints from both modern time and abroad. Additionally, it houses exquisite works by renowned Chinese painters like Huang Shen, Zheng Banqiao, Dong Qichang, Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, and others.

Overall, the museum offers an excellent opportunity to discover both traditional and contemporary Chinese art.

Sanhe Classic Car Museum is home to over 200 beautifully restored vintage and retro automobiles.  Furthermore, it’s a must-visit for car lovers. Feast your eyes on the “Benz One” (1886), the Auburn 851 Speedster (1930) the Aston Martin DB4 (1960), and so many more masterpieces.

This museum is an absolute paradise for foodies. Not only can you learn all about the culture and history behind Sichuan’s world-famous cuisine, there are also traditional snacks waiting to be gobbled up throughout the museum. Moreover, what makes the place unique is that you can learn and eat at the same time. In addition, there are also excellent cooking demonstrations that museum guests can get involved in, giving everyone a chance to master the art of making tasty local food.

The whole tour costs 360RMB per person, which includes entrance and cooking experiences (three dishes). At the end of the tour, guests will be awarded a certificate of “Auguste Gusteau”. English interpreters are available for the experience, costing 200 RMB.
