• If you’re staying in Chengdu (or are visiting) during Chinese New Year, and are looking for a little local flavour, one of the many lantern festivals will be sure to hit the spot. They tend to offer up traditional street snacks, Chinese nicknacks, huge lanterns in all shapes and sizes, and lots and lots of people.

• Most of the lanterns are sculpted to tell a stories based on myths, legends, folk customs, historical stories, movies and TV shows. In Sichuan the Zigong Lantern Festival (a city known for their dinosaur fossils, spicy food, and salt production) is the most famous – but Chengdu is also hosting some of its own.

Tianfu Paradise International Panda Lantern Festival

As a “time-honored brand”, this festival was founded in 1962 – so holds fond memories for generations of local people. The theme of this year’s lantern fair is… “Lantern Festival · New Year in Chengdu” – let’s hope they put more effort into the lanterns, than the name! They’re displaying more than 20,000 lights.

We like their funky modern take on the Chinese lantern: with a huge traditional Chinese ear cleaner, popcorn maker and other on display. Some of the statues even move! Another plus is the location, not too far from Shuangliu airport. There are lots of food stalls and entertainment for the little ones.

This is technically a temple fair, not a Lantern festival – but the differences are minor. The fair is a window into the past and a great opportunity to experience local culture and traditions.

The Wuhou Temple Fair is one of the most iconic large-scale Spring Festival themed events in Chengdu, attracting large crowds. The fair includes many traditional elements including a lantern show, cultural performances, food fairs, and cultural exhibitions. Spiritualism and mysticism is trending in China – with many more young people being interesting in temple culture, so expect to see both the young and old showing up here. Be prepared for huge crowds at this prime tourist destination.

Don’t miss the main stage of the Wuhou Temple Fair – where they will show several award-winning performances. Other highlights: AR fantasy world of the Three Kingdoms, cultural performances, featured exhibitions and delicious food.

This lantern festival in Dong’an Lake Park (where the FISU Games were held) is themed with stories of the “Three Thousand Years of Dream Shu Kingdom”. Some people say this is the most impressive lantern show in town this year. It presents a visual feast through a journey from ancient times to the future fantasy time.

The lantern show at the famous Jinsha archaeological site is sure to be a story telling delight – as the lanterns here represent many of the precious findings such as the golden sun bird, from the sacrificial time of ancient Chinese sun worship and sun mythology.

TaiKoo Li Chengdu – Legends of the Year

In front of the main gate of Daci Temple in TaiKoo Li, a giant red dragon leaps out of the pond. The coolest feature is that you can walk amongst the dragons – and take pictures with the dragon up close. For the die-hard dragon hunters, try to also find the hidden dragon in the LV restaurant.

The original (31st!), the biggest and the most famous, it is one of the largest folk cultural activities in China. Zigong’s festival ranks among the top events celebrating heritage in modern times. The most famous and lavish lantern festival near Chengdu, combines classical Chinese art, with state of the art lighting technology. This year a special section is also dedicated to cosplay.

• China Food & Drinks Fair “Tángjiǔhuì 糖酒会”, or Sugar and Wine, is the largest alcoholic beverage trade fair in China; exhibiting food, beverages, spices, packaging machinery and equipment, raw ingredients, food machinery production, and much more.

• The official 108th China Sugar & Wine Fair will be held from April 12th until 14th at Chengdu’s two huge exhibition centres, but lots of hotels (especially in the city center) are full, and many more boozy events will be taking place around town.

This trade fair that was born in China’s planned economy era and has gradually developed and grown since then. Along with the reform and opening-up of the country, the production and sales of produce like sugar, alcohol and beverages were becoming increasingly lucrative, so from 1984, the fair was held twice a year, in Spring and then again in the Autumn.

Many hotels, such as Kempinski (6 Floors), Shangri-La, Taihe Int.’l Hotel, Wanda Reign, The Renaissance, Jinjiang Hotel, Minshan Hotel, Sheraton Lido, among others.

The big exhibitions each have a different focus and will be held at both the New International Convention & Exhibition Center (wine, spirits & beer) AND the Western China International Exposition City (ingredients, food, dairy, packaging/ design, equipment/ machinery) .

If you haven’t been there before, both places are VAST – with the Western Exposition City alone covering an area of approximately 210,000 ㎡ with more than 4000 exhibitors.

The fair brings a wide variety of food and beverage vendors together (baijiu, other spirits, wine, beer, spices, food additives, etc), but also food packaging machinery, raw ingredients, food machinery production, and much more.

If you’re expecting a food festival like the ones you may have been to at home and planning a leisurely day out – The Sugar and Wine Fair is not this. It’s mostly focused on business to business sales and has been described as ‘messy sales, crowded fair’ – spot on.

Navigating this expo, if you’re looking to make sales, is no easy task, even with industry customer contacts, as it often involves shuttling between hotels in order to see more clients. The traffic situation in Chengdu is usually significantly worse during the Fair.

For the time being, the China Food and Drinks Fair is still a gathering of local Chinese companies. It is far from being geared to international standards and, for now, overseas businesses should not expect an overnight share of the rewards.
