The winners are in! A huge thank you to everyone who voted in this year’s Chengdu-Expat Awards. After 3 weeks of nominations, voting and the judging – we can finally reveal who you chose to celebrate this year in the city!

Just like last year, 30% of the vote was decided by judges from Chengdu’s international community. The panel had all been in Chengdu for more than 5 years, and run their own projects int he city.

The majority of the vote of course went to you. A big thank you to the 10.000+ people who make up the very fabric of Chengdu’s complicated weave to take the time to vote. The people that keep the restaurants, hotels, bars and community doors open daily.

And wow Chengdu, you like to party! Over 220 people came out to celebrate the city’s best and brightest on a night of glitz and glamour, at the W Chengdu’s SPARK rooftop bar. They walked the red carpet, heard the judges announcing the winners, and enjoyed the live band.

Hospitality is never easy, and the Chengdu-Expat awards are back for the 9th time to recognize the people and places in Chengdu, that keep us fed, watered, and happy – giving thanks to the places that make this city such an incredible place to live!

A big thank you to the 3000+ people that took the time to nominate their favourite people, and places. The open nominations closed at midnight on 19th February!

The top ten most nominated placed in each category are now going to go through a public vote – which will run until 23:59 on 02.03.2025.

How To Open a Bank Account in Chengdu

Opening a bank account in Chengdu is almost an essential as the city relies more and more on electronic payments. Here’s everything you need to know:

Documents to Prepare Before Opening a New Bank Account:

Passport (Original + Photocopy).
Have your phone number ready.
Choose the bank and find the closest location. (If you come to work in China, verify with your company which bank account they use).
Some useful Chinese sentences to help you with opening a new account

Just show them to your bank clerks whenever you get confused.

Sentence 1:

Can I please open a debit card?

我可以打开借记卡吗？

Wǒ kěyǐ dǎkāi jiè jì kǎ ma?

Sentence 2:

This is my passport and cellphone number.

这是我的护照和手机号码

Zhè shì wǒ de hù zhào hé shǒu jī hào mǎ

Sentence 3:

Can I have a notification on the account balance?

我可以通知帐户余额吗？

Wǒ kě yǐ tōngzhī zhànghù yú’é ma?

Sentence 4:

What’s the phone number customer service centre?

什么是电话号码客户服务中心?

Shénme shì diànhuà hàomǎ kèhù fúwù zhōngxīn?

After you get your Debit Card

You can connect your debit card with your WeChat account and Alipay account.
There will be some service charges if you transfer money on an ATM to an account from another bank. It may take up to 24 hours before your money gets transferred to the new account.
If you want other services, please call customer service centre or download a Bank APP to help you with your problems.

Other notes and tips

You may need a copy of your lease and your police registration and invitation letter, depending on which visa you have.

The Bank of China in Tongzillin Masters Complex have English speaking staff and it is often quick to open an account there. Large ICBCs also have a streamline process
