Nothing compared to last month’s 12 foreign movies. We don’t believe in balance here in this country.

There’s an ounce of good news, though, Captain Marvel secured a same day release with the US! That means we’ll get it in Mainland China on March 8. More about that next month.

Back to February: we get a Japanese romance flick and another anime, the new cyberpunk action film written and produced by none other than James Cameron (which is based on Japanese manga), and possibly a heavily Oscar-nominated Mexican drama.

Wow, a Japanese love story releasing on Valentine’s Day. All the guys out there breath a sigh of relief as they plan to just take their lover to the movies instead of an expensive romantic dinner. Good luck with that, gentlemen.

The plot: An assistant director and film fan gets his wish come true when his favorite heroine, a princess from an old film, magically appears in the real world.

Sounds kinda familiar, but the dreamers out there are sure to love it.

For those who don’t know, The Grinch tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit.

Funny, heartwarming, and assumedly visually stunning, it’s a universal story about the spirit of Christmas and the indomitable power of optimism. Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company.

With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Whoville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter, and louder celebrations. What will he do when the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year!?

The March of the Penguins 2 is the sequel to the highly entertaining Oscar-nominated The March of the Penguins documentary that was first released in 2005.

Hiccup

《嗝嗝老师》

gé gé lǎo shī

aka Hichki

Director: Siddharth P. Malhotra

Actors: Rani Mukerji, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Neeraj Kabi, Harsh Mayar, Vikrant Soni

China Release Date: Friday, October 12, 2018

Note: this movie is in Hindi with Chinese subtitles

An Indian film in China without Aamir or Salman Khan! This is big time. Still about the education system, though, so it should definitely still resonate with audiences here.

A good teacher can change your life. The movies have always understood that. And now we have Hiccup – about a teacher who suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome. And it’s actually a remake of the rather forgettable Hollywood film Front of the Class which came out about 10 years ago.

Teacher films generally follow a set formula, which positions the teacher as a redeemer who unlocks the hidden potential of his or her lackluster students. Hiccup is no different except that here, the teacher is also struggling with her own hurdle – a neurological condition, which causes motor tics.

Oh, and don’t forget awesome Bollywood dance routines~

The Titan

《超能泰坦》

chāo néng tài tǎn

Director: Lennart Ruff

Actors: Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling, Tom Wilkinson, Nathalie Emmanuel

China Release Date: Friday, October 12, 2018

Yes, this came out over 6 months ago and probably all movie fans in China have already downloaded it, but hey… it’s got the guy from Avatar and that one girl from Game of Thrones… let’s throw it in the cinemas and see what happens.

Here’s the gist, a military family takes part in a ground-breaking secret experiment of genetic evolution and space exploration. Mutants are born but the earth is not saved, only made worse.

We’re gonna be honest with you here – this movie is bad. Even for fans of sci-fi and “enhanced” humans this one is unbearable. Save your time and money and go watch some cuddly penguins instead.

China Release Date: Friday, October 12, 2018

Note: this might be in Chinese with Chinese subtitles, check your tickets before purchase.

And yes, this is the same movie that came out back in 2014 and was original slated for a July 2018 release. We guess October is a better month for bees.

Freshly hatched bee Maya is a little whirlwind and won’t follow the rules of the hive. One of these rules is not to trust the hornets that live beyond the meadow. When the Royal Jelly is stolen, the hornets are suspected and Maya is thought to be their accomplice.

No one believes that she is the innocent victim and no one will stand by her except for her good-natured and best friend Willy. After a long and eventful journey to the hornets hive Maya and Willy soon discover the true culprit and the two friends finally bond with the other residents of the opulent meadow.

China Release Date: Friday, September 21, 2018

Have you ever wondered why film piracy is so rampant in China? Here’s your second biggest reason: it often takes so long for good films to come on over!

If you haven’t already downloaded this remake, it’d be great to see in the cinema late at night with few others around. Especially if you’re a fan of Willis, Shue, and D’Onofrio.

Synopsis: Dr. Paul Kersey (Willis) is a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of his city’s violence as it’s rushed into his ER – until his wife (Shue) and college-age daughter (Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home.

With the police overloaded with crimes, Paul, burning for revenge, hunts for his family’s assailants to deliver justice. As the anonymous slayings of criminals grabs the media’s attention, the city wonders if this deadly avenger is a guardian angel… or a grim reaper.

Move over The Rock, this is classic Bruce Willis!

Another full-length animated feature from Japan sure to impress the most astute anime fans. But again, they’ve probably already seen it because it’s from LAST year. And there’s already a live-action Hollywood remake in the works.

Years into the future and the human race has been defeated several times by the new ruling force of the planet: “kaijus”… The ruler of that force is Godzilla, the “King” of the Monsters.

Humanity is in such defeat, preparations to leave the planet have been made, and several people have been chosen to look at a new planet to see if it is inhabitable. Realizing it’s not, though, the human race resorts to Plan B: to defeat Godzilla and take back their planet.

You’d think that would’ve been Plan A.

Five years ago, expert sea diver and Naval Captain Jonas Taylor encountered an unknown danger in the unexplored recesses of the Mariana Trench that forced him to abort his mission and abandon half his crew.

Though the tragic incident earned him a dishonorable discharge, what ultimately cost him his career, his marriage, and any semblance of honor was his unsupported and incredulous claims of what caused it – an attack on his vessel by a mammoth, 70-foot sea creature, believed to be extinct for more than a million years.

But when a submersible lies sunk and disabled at the bottom of the ocean – carrying his ex-wife among the team onboard – he is the one who gets the call. Whether a shot at redemption or a suicide mission, Jonas must confront his fears and risk his own life and the lives of everyone trapped below on a single question: Could the Carcharodon Megalodon – the largest marine predator that ever existed – still be alive … and on the hunt?
