Profile
Picasso and Dali, The Legendary Collection
Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso are two of the most well regarded artists of the 20th century – and this summer some of their iconic works have made their way to Chengdu. From June 21st until August 20th, Illu Art and Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li will present an exhibition of artwork by the legendary Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) and Salvador Dalí (1904 – 1989).
Whilst these two artists are widely recognised as the most influential of their time – both their personal and working relationships were fraught with a young Dalí famously irritating Picasso – and are only thought to have worked together once on the print “Cadavre Exquis”.
It is for this reason this exhibition is so unique as there are artists which have more obvious comparisons like Dalí and the Surrealists, or Picasso and Matisse or Braque. Marrying the work of these two is less common, but there are moments when there is a real proximity in their pieces and they sit together beautifully; the ceramics, sketches and sculptures being displayed in Chengdu this summer are flecked with both Dalí’s trademark surrealism and the cubism favoured by Picasso.
