‘The Modern Road – French Contemporary Painting Art Exhibition’ kicked-off last Wednesday at the Tianfu Square’s Chengdu Museum (first floor, in the exhibition hall). Go and gaze at the wonderful modern and contemporary art collections made of 51 pieces from some of the most famous European painters, including Monet, Picasso, Matisse, Jean Dubuffet among others.
This exhibition covers a very large number of artistic movements, from the French Revolution to Realism, Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Surrealism, etc.
Here’s a snippet of some of the masterpieces on display at the exhibition:
– Circle-painted Water Lilies of Claude Monet, one of only four in the world. Just to remind you, the Water Lilies is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings, and the one in this exhibition is the first circular one Monet completed. This treasure belongs to the French St. Etienne Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art.
– Four original Picasso paintings are exhibited, including Venus and Cupid, after Cranach.
The organiser has set-up four big interactive touch screens as well as headphone sets where you can hear the Berlioz’s romantic symphony and both French and Chinese Baudelaire poetry recitations.
Valérie Belin
On the second floor, Chengdu Museum has on display a photography exhibition of Valérie Belin’s shots. This French photographer is well-known for revisiting the themes of Still Life, Vanitas and Memento Mori. In Chengdu, she is exhibiting a selection of black and white photographs, which juxtapose the real and the unreal to create a feeling of tension.

Subway: Subway line 1 or line 2 to the Tianfu Square metro station.
Bus: 13, 30, 43, 47, 64, 78, to West Palace Street.
There is an underground parking bay operating 24 hours a day, but
local authorities recommend to come by public transport.
