Sichuan Museum
四川博物馆
Founded in 1941, Sichuan Museum has a history of more than 70 years, and prides itself as being the largest comprehensive museum across the whole of Southwest China.
It covers an area of 12,900 square meters with 14 exhibition halls. There are more than 320,000 historical relics in the museum, including over 50,000 of which are classed as ‘national valuable historical relics’.Sichuan Museum exhibits cultural relics of Sichuan history from more than 5,000 years ago to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and the Republic of China (1912-1949) on the first floor. The bronze wares of the Ba-Shu era and pictorial bricks and pottery sculptures of the Han Dynasty (206BC-AD220) are the most distinguished. On the third floor, Buddhist cultural relics such as statutes, Chinese arts and crafts, and artifacts of Sichuan ethnic culture are available.
Previously the museum had a large collection of paintings by Zhang Daqian, though not anymore.
There is an optional paid audio guide service available, plus multimedia audio guides (available in Chinese, English, French, Japanese, Korean, Italian, German). In-house lecturers are on hand to provide professional explanations on various pieces. Visitors can inquire about these services at the museum’s information desk.
Sichuan Museum is close to Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, home to one of the greatest Chinese poets. If you are interested in Chinese poetry, a visit to the Cottage before or after going to the museum won’t disappointment.
