Wide and Narrow Alley – 宽窄巷子
After visiting the pandas, many travelers explore Chengdu’s charming “new old” streets like Wenshu Temple and Jinli Street. So, make sure to include Wide and Narrow Alley (Kuanzhai Xiangzi) in your itinerary.
Kuanzhai Alley, known locally as Wide and Narrow Alley, was officially recognized as a National Demonstration Pedestrian Street in 2020. This honor highlights its rich cultural heritage and vibrant community life
This historic block dates back to the Qing Dynasty. In fact, its three parallel lanes, Wide Alley, Narrow Alley, and Well Alley, once housed Manchu and Mongolian banners. Today, they offer a window into the city’s past. Specifically, Wide Alley features some of the best-preserved antique buildings. Meanwhile, Narrow Alley blends Qing-era architecture with early Republic and Western-style structures. Finally, Well Alley is the place to experience local folk culture. Here, you can explore traditional teahouses, snack stalls, cultural crafts, and even watch shadow puppets or Sichuan opera.
Furthermore, you’ll find a lively mix of modern entertainment. There are bars, coffee shops, ice cream stands, and European-style boutiques scattered throughout the lanes. Moreover, the alleys host regular cultural displays and live performances.
We recommend visiting in the evening. Then, the alleys fill with locals who gather to stroll and exercise. Plus, soft lighting makes the historic buildings feel like the set of a period drama.
🚇 How to get there: Take the Metro Line 4, get off at Kuanzhai Alley Station, 宽窄巷子站
📍 Address: No.127 Changshun Street, Qingyang District 青羊区长顺上街127号
