About Bach’s Goldberg Variations
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, written for harpsichord, consists of a set of 30 variations bookended by two statements of an aria in G major. One of the most important examples of variation form, in the classical works, this is often referred to as the most ambitious composition ever written for a keyed instrument.
During Tianqi Du’s performance at Carnegie Hal, the Chinese pianist was said to breath new life into the piece, “leading the audience through feelings of fire, tranquility, desperation, and unadulterated joy in these compositions”.
