Echoes of the Snow Peaks
Ashish Maharjan · Nepali Flute Solo Recital
As the first musician to study Master’s degree in Himalayan flute performance at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu—and the student of the university’s first-ever bachelor’s programme in flute music—Ashish Maharjan has brought a millennia-old art into the academy. This concert is a sonic map drawn by the flute—from west to east, from snow peaks to plains—carrying you across the entire geography of Nepal. You will hear ancient Newari melodies from the Kathmandu Valley, handed down for over a thousand years. These demanding tunes, which once echoed beneath the carved eaves of Durbar Square and among the red-brick temples of Patan, are the secret, thousand-year-old whispers the Newari ancestors offered to their gods. From the vast mountain songs of the western Himalayas to the warm, pastoral folk ballads of the southern Terai Plains, scattered folk melodies—many of them now fiercely difficult to master and kept alive only by a handful of elders—will awaken one after another, telling the sorrows, joys and hopes born of different soils.
