A great big 你好 to all of you beautiful people! James here, back on your screens once again to help expose you to some of the Du’s tune-age.The football has finally finished. And although I personally enjoyed the journey and eventual heartbreak it brought to me and many of my compatriates, I’m more than ready to get stuck back into the nitty gritty of the Sichuan capital’s fiesty little bubble of noise; maintaining itself so proudly within the confines of the great ring roads.After a couple of arguably quietish weeks on the scene, this weekend is absolutely jam-packed with live, melodic madness for you to indulge in. Get yourself out of your apartment; off those stuffy, construction ridden streets and get yourself into one of the cities numerous fantastic venues.

Brain Failure (脑浊乐队)

Think back for a minute. You’re 16 years old, piled into a crowd in front of your favourite band. Rock/Punk/Metal is your newly discovered love, and you’re feeling like a complete boss. Many of your foolish contemporaries are listening to ‘mainstream’ garbage, whereas you’re begging your Mum to allow you to go to your first music festival with your friends. Many of us will have fond memories of our first exposure to alternative music. The chaos, the queuing for tickets, the layer of your (and others) sweat dripping off you as you rock out. For me, all of those memories came flooding back while I was listening to “Brain Failure” (脑浊乐队) earlier this week.

These guys are true legends of the Beijing punk scene. Formed all the way back in 1997, they have been rocking out venues all across the country and abroad for nearly 25 years, sharing stages with like likes of Nine Inch Nails, Ramones and Dropkick Murphys. This combined with participation in the huge “Warped Tour” across the US in 2005, really gives us an idea of who these guys are; hardcore veterans of the Chinese scene.

Their original brand of hardcore punk has exposed listeners all around the world to what China has to offer in terms of underground music; and us lucky Chengdu’ers have a fantastic opportunity to catch them this Saturday night at Le Space (乐空间) over by the East Railway Station. Their “F**k Off 2020” tour has been widely anticipated across China. So, grab your tickets now! There will be beer, there will be mosh pits, there will be madness. Seriously, this one is not to be missed.
