Chengdu Wuhou Shrine Museum
成都武侯祠博物馆
The Wuhou Shrine Museum is located inside Chengdu’s First Ring Road, close to the city center. Thanks to its central location, it’s easy to reach from all parts of Chengdu.
The museum was built to honor Liu Bei, his famous chancellor Zhuge Liang, and other key figures from the Shu Han period. Its roots go back to the year 221, when Liu Bei’s Hui Mausoleum and the Hanzhaolie Temple were first built during the Zhangwu Era.
Around the year 500, during the Northern and Southern Dynasties, the museum was moved from Shaocheng City to a site next to Hui Mausoleum and Hanzhaolie Temple. This location remained important through the Ming dynasty.
In 1390, during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming dynasty, Prince Zhu Chun visited the temple. He decided to combine Hui Mausoleum, Hanzhaolie Temple, and Wuhou Shrine into one complex, saying that “a lord and his ministers should be together.”
Although the shrine honors both Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, Zhuge Liang is often more admired by the public. For this reason, many people now refer to the entire complex as the Wuhou Shrine Museum.
