Encounters Across Cultures: Seeds of Life
Located in the heart of Chengdu, The Temple House perfectly meshes with the modern sophistication of local heritage in Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li. This year’s House Collective’s Art Programme celebrates each House’s connection to local and global cultures.
The House Collective has collaborated with Katja Loher, an award-winning multidisciplinary artist. Loher is known for her video sculptures, changing the face of video art by presenting her work as organic sculptural forms. Inspired by the five Chinese elements – metal, wood, water, fire and earth – Loher’s video works infuse the local culture together in bringing these elements to life.
The final exhibition in The House Collective’s ‘Encounters Across Cultures’ series launched at The Temple House in Chengdu this November, with a dynamic installation that combines Loher’s modern video sculpture concept with Chinese traditional masters that continue to be a cultural staple in Chengdu. The Temple House and Katja Loher have partnered with local Chinese ink painters, Hao Wu and Yong Ma to bring to life the art of traditional Chinese ink painting.
These installations at The Temple House will take guests on a journey throughout the property, flowing from Bi Tie Shi Courtyard, to its Gallery, above the staircase and through to Jing Bar.
Katja’s past work has incorporated music, dance and costume to celebrate universal connections. With Chengdu as The Land of Abundance, Katja enlists artists Hao Wu and Yong Ma’s expertise in the city’s meticulous calligraphy and tea ceremony culture to bring these traditional elements into her video sculptures.
Meanwhile, JING bar of The Temple House specially prepared five cocktails to echo the theme of this art programme, symbolizing “Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth”. Each of them independently carry the characteristics of the five elements.
From 7th Nov 2019 to 3rd Jan 2020, Encounters Across Cultures transforms The Temple House into an immersive art journey – the final rendition of ‘Seeds of Life’.
