Ping’anqiao Catholic Church
Ping’anqiao Catholic Church, also known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is one of the oldest and most well-known Catholic churches in Chengdu. It is located in the Qingyang District and serves as both a place of worship and a symbol of cultural exchange.
The church was built between 1897 and 1904. French Bishop Jacques-Victor-Marius Rouchouse led its construction. The design mixes Byzantine and Renaissance styles with local Sichuan touches, giving the building a unique and beautiful appearance.
The church grounds include the main cathedral, several smaller chapels, and the bishop’s residence. There are also living spaces for priests. One standout feature is the set of 108 tall cedar columns, many brought from the nearby Qionglai Mountains.
Even after natural disasters and social changes, the church has remained strong. It continues to offer weekly Mass, English service on Saturdays and a Chinese international service on Sundays.
Visitors are welcome. You can walk through peaceful courtyards, admire the historic building, and enjoy the calm setting. In 2013, the Chinese government named it a National Key Cultural Relic.
