We dropped into this hot new spot in the Wannianxiang shopping centre, which serves up Taiwanese style breakfast and snacks. The breakfast offerings are soymilk and youtiao, sandwiches described as shao bing, and rice wraps. Our main reason for making the trek across town to check the place out was to try the salty soy milk, (咸豆浆), which is served warm and thickened slightly, savoury with chunks of pickled vegetable, fried youtiao and strips of seaweed. Salty soy milk is much more common in coastal areas of the country; it’s quite rare in Chengdu and other customers were looking curiously at the bowl and calling it dou hua, but we really like the version here and hope it catches on. We also got a rice wrap (饭团), the signature snack with sticky rice wrapped around the customer’s filling of choice. There are several proteins available, so we went with the bacon and egg version, which included many crunchy and savoury bits that filled up the sticky rice wrapper nicely without overwhelming it. We would definitely grab a rice wrap to go for lunch if we came by for breakfast.
The late afternoon crowd were mainly families taking a break after shopping or older folks having a light dinner. The decor has a whiff of Japanese aesthetic, with lots of wood and open space, and the service is super efficient even though they’d been open less than a week when we dropped in. The menu is in traditional characters printed on strips of wood behind the cashier’s head that you have to read out to order. We are still pretty happy to have a new style of Taiwanese food in town. Most snacks are under 20RMB.
