Chengdu International Football League: 13 Years of Unity Through Sport
Over the past 13 years, Chengdu has changed dramatically. Giant buildings have risen from construction sites, new metro lines continue to open, and the city’s footprint expands almost daily. Yet one thing in the world of sport has stayed the same: the Chengdu International Football League (CIFL).
Founded in 2011, the Chengdu International Football League was created to bring together the city’s growing international community. What started as a casual get-together has grown into a thriving league that hosts competitive 8-a-side matches every Saturday. Players from more than 40 countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, have taken to the pitches, turning this weekly tradition into one of Chengdu’s most enduring expat activities.
The CIFL is about more than just football. It’s a way for newcomers to meet people, stay active, and become part of the city’s diverse social fabric. Whether you’re a lifelong footballer or a beginner looking to try something new, there’s a team for you. The 2024 season kicks off on October 13th, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most exciting seasons yet.
The matches are highly organized, competitive, and always full of energy. Many players find that the league helps them build lasting friendships and professional networks. New players are always welcome, no matter your skill level or background.
