Profile
Jinsha Site Museum 金沙遗址博物馆
For many centuries, the Chinese have considered the Yellow river the cradle of Chinese civilization. But this began to change in 1986, when archaeological discoveries in Guanghan, about 40 minutes north of Chengdu, uncovered the Sanxingdui civilization, part of the mysterious Shu kingdom of the Shang dynasty, dating back some 3,000 years. In 2001, the ancient settlement of Jinsha was discovered during real estate construction, offering similarly rich discoveries. The state of the art museum, which now sits at the site, offers an elegantly displayed treasury of artifacts.
Jinsha was China’s first major archaeological discovery in the 21st century. It’s the site of Shang and Zhou Dynasty ruins, with ceremonial sites, large ancient buildings, general residences, and cemeteries.
Jinsha Site Museum has more than 10,000 cultural relics, including gold, bronze, jade, stoneware, lacquerware, ivory, and pottery artifacts, accounting for 50% of the total number of cultural relics in the museum.
The various gold ornaments and masks carry with them the mysterious legends of the Shang and Zhou dynasties.
The Golden Sun Bird is of particular interest, being the core pattern of Chengdu’s city logo and a mark of Chinese cultural heritage. It’s a must-see for many tourists coming to Chengdu.
The museum provides professional tour guides, with tours in both English and Mandarin. Self-service audio guides are also available in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean, French, German and Spanish. Audio guides cost 10 RMB, with a 200 RMB deposit.
All these services can be purchased at the booking office.
