Not gonna lie, this might be the best month for movies in China in the history of movies in China. Even with the exact same number of films as last month, we have MUCH more variety and there is absolutely something for everyone.

We’ve got action, we’ve got fantasy, we’ve got cartoons, we’ve got comedy, we’ve got drama, we’ve got animals, we’ve got rich Asians… What’s not to like?

The Hurricane Heist

《飓风奇劫》

jù fēng qí jié

Director: Rob Cohen

Actors: Toby Kebbell, Maggie Grace, Ryan Kwanten

China Release Date: Friday, November 2, 2018

In the running for the worst movie of the year, this CGI “thriller” if we can call it that, received so many poor reviews back in March when it first came out. If you like disasters and fake graphics, this one’s definitely for you.

The gist: thieves attempt a massive heist against the U.S. Treasury as a Category 5 hurricane approaches one of its Mint facilities. In another word, boring. The cat one looks heaps better.

Venom

《毒液:致命守护者》

dú yè :zhì mìng shǒu hù zhě

Director: Ruben Fleischer

Actors: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson

China Release Date: Friday, November 9, 2018

To all the naysayers who thought this wouldn’t come to China, eat your words! Although it’ll be heavily censored, it still might be worth a gander on the big screen.

When Eddie Brock acquires the powers of a symbiote, he will have to release his alter-ego “Venom” to save his life. Although this film isn’t integrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s totally the same world. And although the reviews for the film are bad, we’re still gonna see it. Just don’t read the reviews.

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer

《名侦探柯南: 零的执行人》

míng zhēn tàn kē nán:líng de zhí háng rén

aka: 名探偵コナン ゼロの執行人

Director: Yuzuru Tachikawa

Actors: Tôru Furuya, Megumi Hayashibara, Rikiya Koyama

China Release Date: Friday, November 9, 2018

Note: this one is in Japanese with Chinese subtitles

Hate to break it to ya, but this is the 22nd in a long series of Detective Conan animé flicks. And this particular one isn’t a great entry point. At least Amuro shows up.

In it, Detective Conan investigates an explosion that occurs on the opening day of a large Tokyo resort and convention center. Of course, mystery does feature in the film, as Conan still needs to figure out the true culprit behind it.

The highly anticipated Fantastic Beasts 2 has scored a same-day release with the USA~ A huge win for Harry Potter fans in China! Yay.

Magizoologist Newt Scamander returns in this “even better than the first” sequel… and we get to see more of Grindelwald, obviously, as well as many younger versions of our favorite characters from the original HP series, including Professor Dumbledore himself.

This being a must-see is an understatement.

Johnny English Strikes Again

《憨豆特工3》

hān dòu tè gōng sān

Director: David Kerr

Actors: Rowan Atkinson, Emma Thompson, Ben Miller, Olga Kurylenko

China Release Date: Friday, November 23, 2018

Rowan Atkinson returns to the big screen in what’s arguably his third best character of all time, ol’ chap Johnny English.

The new adventure begins when a cyber-attack reveals the identity of all active undercover agents in Britain, leaving Johnny English as the Secret Service’s last hope. Called out of retirement, English dives head first into action with the mission to find the mastermind hacker. As a man with few skills and analog methods, Johnny English must overcome the challenges of modern technology to make this mission a success.

Strange, that sounds exactly like the latest Mission Impossible.

Ralph Breaks The Internet

《无敌破坏王2: 大闹互联网》

wú dí pò huài wáng èr:dà nào hù lián wǎng

Directors: Phil Johnston, Rich Moore

Actors: John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Gal Gadot, Kristen Bell, Mandy Moore

China Release Date: Friday, November 23, 2018

Another same-week release for China! Six years after the events of Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph and Vanellope, now friends, discover a wifi router in their arcade, leading them into a new adventure.

And if you look closer at the Chinese poster for this film, you can’t help but laugh. Oh, the irony! Some of those “internet” logos are mysteriously blocked here, but a movie about them still happens to sneak in… we assume those parts will be blurred out or renamed, though. On principle.

Obviously, the most anticipated part of this will be seeing all the Disney princesses (and voices) together in the same scene. We literally can’t wait~

Director: Jon M. Chu

Actors: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong

China Release Date: Friday, November 30, 2018

No idea how this one will do in Mainland China, but we assume, with all of the buzz and great reviews around the world, it’s gonna do pretty well. For best experience, watch with a theater full of Crazy [Middle Class] Asians.

The story follows Rachel Chu (Wu), an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick’s (Golding) hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding.

Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he’s perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia, and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down.
