Films this March

We’ve said it before, but it’s good to be reminded: China allows just a few dozen non-Chinese films into its cinemas every year and we’ve already had more than 20 in 2017… on track for the biggest year yet. Here are the films coming to cinemas in Chengdu this March:

The LEGO Batman Movie

乐高蝙蝠侠大电影

lè gāo biān fú xiá dà diàn yǐng

Director: Chris McKay

Actors: Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes, Zach Galifianakis

China Release Date: Friday, Mar. 3, 2017

The one we’ve all been waiting for! Some have looked forward to this even more than Star Wars. And that’s okay. Expectations are so high because the first LEGO movie was so exceedingly awesome that this can be nothing less. We also expect a lot of cameos.

Because it’s Batman.

Storyline says there are big changes brewing in Gotham City, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Logan

金刚狼3:殊死一战

jīn gāng láng sān:shū sǐ yī zhàn

Director: James Mangold

Actors: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen

China Release Date: Friday, Mar. 3, 2017

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

This has become a must-see because we recently learned that it will be Jackman and Stewart’s last X-Men movie before they retire from the franchise. The reviews look good and the cinema experience is probably worth it.

A Dog’s Purpose

一条狗的使命

yī tiáo gǒu de shǐ mìng

Directors: Lasse Hallström

Actors: Dennis Quaid, Josh Gad, Peggy Lipton, KJ Apa

China Release Date: Friday, Mar. 3, 2017

A dog looks to discover his purpose in life over the course of several lifetimes and owners. This one could either be really good or really bad.

Surrounded by controversy after a heavily-edited video was released online, it’s facing mixed reviews in the rest of the world. Dog lovers in China will most likely love it.

Be forewarned… this one will probably be like Marley and Me times ten.

Genius

天才捕手

tiān cái bǔ shǒu

Director: Michael Grandage

Actors: Colin Firth, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Laura Linney

China Release Date: Friday, Mar. 10, 2017

When, one day of 1929, writer Thomas Wolfe, decided to keep the appointment made by Max Perkins, editor at Scribner’s, he had no illusions: his manuscript would be turned down as had invariably been the case. But, to his happy amazement, his novel, which was to become “Look Homeward, Angel“, was accepted for publication.

The only trouble was that it was overlong (300 pages) and had to be reduced. Although reluctant to see his poetic prose trimmed, Wolfe agreed and helped by Perkins, who had become a true friend, with the result that it instantly became a favorited with the critics and best seller.

Drama at its finest, we will see any movie with Colin Firth’s accent in it!

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

最终幻想15:王者之剑

zuì zhōng huàn xiǎng shí wǔ :wáng zhě zhī jiàn

Director: Takeshi Nozue

Actors: Aaron Paul, Lena Headey, Sean Bean

China Release Date: Friday, Mar. 10, 2017

King Regis, who oversees the land of Lucis, commands his army of soldiers to protect the kingdom from the Niflheim empire’s plans to steal the sacred crystal which gives Lucis its magic and power.

All in weirdly cool animation. It actually came out last summer and if you haven’t seen it online yet, it might be worth it for the visuals. Not for the story or the acting.

měi nǚ yǔ yě shòu

What may be his only opportunity arrives when he meets Belle, the only human girl to ever visit the castle since it was enchanted.

Be honest, you’re gonna go see this one purely for nostalgia.
