We’ve been hearing a lot about 5G coming to Chengdu in the last few months, but what does that actually mean for you?
Do We Need 5G?
With the increasing popularity of video streaming, networks are becoming overcrowded especially when many people in the same area are trying to get access to data at the same time – the demand for data is growing. That is why you may have experienced those annoying times where your internet is dreadfully slow.
5G technology is much better at offering consistent speed to hundreds and thousands of devices at the same time including other electronics such as sensors and cameras.
Also, 5G will not only enable our smartphones to be faster, but in the future – also will have other applications such as augmented reality, self-driving vehicles, rescue drones, wearable technology, and more.
Is 5G Here Yet?
Chengdu is one of the first 5G trial sites that China is developing 5G coverage with major telecom operators such as China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. However, to be able to have 5G network speeds you will have to buy a 5G enabled phone as well as a 5G data plan.
At the beginning of last month, the three major telecom providers started offering 5G data plans and companies such as Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and ZTE have unveiled new 5G smartphones. As an incentive, all three major telecom companies are offering 100G of 5G data for free if you apply for a 5G data plan in the month of September.
However, keep in mind that 5G is now only available in certain places such as Tianfu Square, Taikoo Li, Century City, and other central locations. By the end of the year, Chengdu is expected to have more than 3,000 5G stations across the city.
Is 5G safe?
Some people have raised concerned about the radio-frequency waves from the installation of antennas in highly populated areas that are needed for 5G phones to operate. However, there is not much evidence yet – but something to look out for in the future.
